I will be in Greece during late June. What are the overnight ferries like from Crete? Are they shared rooms? Does one have to worry about theft?

Would going to Crete for four days then to another island (closer to Athens) by boat for a day and then to Athens by boat be an easier way of travelling than directly from Crete to Athens?

Is getting around Luxembourg too difficult to do by public transport?

I was planning on travelling from Amsterdam to Luxembourg City to Leipzig. Are there any cities between Luxembourg City and Leipzig that you would recommend stopping off at for a night if I was taking the train? Am I better off going from Amsterdam to Berlin to Leipzig?

Also do you know of any tour companies in Leipzig? Is there someone who give tours of Jena and Auserstedt or the Battle of the Five Armies?

Bahn.de shows you the direct route. Loads of places but Frankfurt is the main station you could go through. From Amsterdam it still takes a fair bit of time. I'd play with rone2rio for a bit to find some nice alternatives

Cheap flights in Greece (Aegean Airlines/Olympic Air) for next June between the islands and Athens are available if you book this far in advance. Ferries ( www.gtp.gr )from Crete seating depends on which ferry and which destination. Not all are overnight. There is open deck seating, reseved aircraft-style seating, VIP lounges and private cabins. The all-enclosed highspeed ferries only have seats and no cabins.

About the overnight accommodations ... I have not take the Overnight ferries to crete, but on other overnight ferries, there are also shared single-sex cabins with 4 bunks + ensuite bath ... we once took such from Naxos to Piraeus. It was a 4-bunk cabin, but my firend & I were the only occupants. Very reasonable rates. The only theft you would have to worry about would be from fellow room-sharers (actually in Greece, usually fellow holiday-makers are chief source of pilfering, NOT Greek staff).

Crete - Piraeus via another Island:
from May until October, you may take a catamaran from Iraklio to Santorini, Naxos, Paros or Mykonos and continue from there to Piraus by slow ferry the day after or later.

Amsterdam - Leipzig:
there are many possible intineraries, all with tons of possible stopovers like:
Aachen, Cologne, Middle Rhine Valley, Mosel Valley, Harz, small medieval cities in Sachsen Anhalt and Thuringen, Nazi concentration camps.....

I have travelled more than 50 times with ferries (I'm Greek, duh) and never lost a needle. I even leave my table with everything on it and go to see the sea from the deck, it's that safe. The only thing you should worry is to get early, so you can get a table. You don't want to spend 5 hours without sitting, or under the sun in the deck.

Who told you this nonsense? It is sad that there are so many self-proclaimed "travel experts" in the world who know nothing but are full of prejudices.

Berlin is one of the great capital cities of Europe and it is full of history. There are splendid historical buildings along Unter den Linden Boulevard and on the Gendarmenmarkt. Berlin has some of the world's best museums including the outstanding Pergamon Museum with the Ishtar Gate of Babylon and Neues Museum with Queen Nefertiti's bust.

If you are interested in the history of war, Berlin is must. Checkpoint Charlie is a cool little place but there is also the Topography of Terror and many other sites.

The fastest train connection between Luxembourg and Leipzig takes 7:31 with two changes - which is not too bad.

The fastest train from Luxembourg to Berlin is 8:17, and from Berlin to Leipzig 1:12, so the detour via Berlin would fit into schedule.

If you are interested in the history of war Münster might be interesting for you. It is a charming historical city with a medieval City Hall where the Westphalian Treaty was negotiated which ended the 30 Years War. A very attractive town.

From Luxembourg to Münster the train takes 5:28 with only one change, and from Münster to Berlin 3:32. From Amsterdam to Münster it takes just 2:53 (if that is still an option).

How long is the trip from Heraklion to Piraeus? Am I better off flying?

If flying to Chania how does one get to Chania from the airport? Also, I'd like to see Elafonissi Beach and Sfinari. Is it possible to get there by public transportation?

Can one get around in Luxembourg using public transportation to get to the castles such as Vianden or Bourscheid?
