We're starting to plan our first African trip which will include a few days at a safari reserve/lodge, Victoria Falls, and Capetown for sure. I understand the Garden Route is just a bit over 124 miles long - so that makes me wonder if we could take in a lot of scenery if we hired a driver for a round-trip day from Capetown, early a.m. to evening. Or are there just too many stops??? I guess I'm kind of thinking of it like the drive along Big Sur in California (90 miles of great scenery, but not much that you need to stop and "sightsee"). Set me straight, please, about how much time we really need and for what.

Your trip sounds lovely. I would add another week at least and stay in Franschhoek (beautiful wine farms) then venture down to Hermanus. You can even see whales there between June and November. From there I would go onto Swellendam followed by a couple of nights in the beautiful beach area of Plettenberg Bay from which you can visit Knysna and other nearby towns. It is then easy to fly from George to Johannesburg or Cape Town to continue your homeward journey. Technically the Garden Route carries on further east, but if you are pressed for time you can do this option in a week...
