September is late winter/early spring here and a little early in the season to go South, particularly far South.
At that time of the year, I would choose between BA, Mendoza, Iguazú and our NW.
Have a great time in our country.

September is a great time for the OSuth but also for the Northwest of Argentina... The scenery is completelly extraordinary, salt flats, deserts and valleys with amazing rock formations are part of the attraction of the whole area.
But to make things even more interesting, our wines are considered one of the best in the worls, as our unique torrontes. And the food, the regional food, and specially the empanadas will make you dresm with a return to the NW!
Just to let you know for any other occasion you come to Argentina.

AVRooster offers great advice! From a personal standpoint....we went to the Falls in Nov.08 and the weather was perfect. Ditto, for Puerto Madryn,Bariloche, El Calafate and El Chalten in Dec.08.
Just returned from the NW in April 2011 and loved every moment.
As for air fares: "suck it up". Don't plan on a cheap flite. I don't think they really exist in South America.

We were in Argentina from Oct - Dec the early part was in the south when we crossed from Pucon in Chile to San Martin de Los Andes in Argentina. Loved that area around the lakes and the weather was ok in the main. We did see some snow on our drive through the Seven Lakes area to Bariloche but it wasn't especially cold and we had lots of blue skies. Didn't make it to El Calafate/Chalten and I do regret that. Puerto Madryn is worthy of consideration if nature & wildlife is your thing. Alink to our blog with photos of these areas and more detail:

Flights are undeniably expensive due in part to the dual pricing system which applies. It may be possible to purchase an airpass outside of the country which may produce cheaper fares if you have a number of flights. Alternatively, if cost is a serious issue as it was for us, then consider using the excellent bus system which for 1st Class travel cost sround a one third of the airfare. the buses are extremely comfortable, the services are certainly more reliable than they are here in England and, although unarguably traveling takes longer, once you take into account time spent hanging around at airports, delayed flights (inevitable in Arg) etc. the difference is not as bad as one might think. Plus, most of teh longer trips can be scheduled overnight (lux. flat beds) thus saving on both time and accomodation costs.
As and alternative to the South, i woiuld second the suggestion of avrooster and flintstones re teh NW. Of all the places we visited in Argentina it is this area in the NW that I want to return to.
So many places, so little time!!
