International calling for 6 week trip to Buenos Aires
My son will be studying in Buenos Aires for 6 weeks this summer. We live in the New York area and would like to be able to talk to him on the phone regularly while he's there. We have a Verizon cell phone plan. I have heard about renting international phones and using prepaid phone cards but I'm really confused as to the best and least expensive way to go. Also, will he need a converter to charge his computer? As you can see we have not traveled overseas in years and can use some advice. Thank you in advance!!

He will not need a converter, however he may need an adapter. When we were there are apartment accepted two types of plugs. The plugs are available in appliance stores all over BA. Google and you will see the plugs used in Argentina.
Skype is a great suggestion for phone contact. If that doesn't work for you, long distance phone cards are available for international calls. They are prepaid and can be used on land lines.

Phones: Beyond using the computer, the easiest and cheapest is to buy those International Phone Cards (as RWYATT says)from most any Kiokso and use it on any land line. Verizon cell is NOT a good option - though AT&T does allow for an 'open line' and one can add a SIM CARD from Arg. through Moviestar or other local companies.
Side Trips: Depending upon your interests and budget, you could fly to Iguazzu Falls for one or 2 overnights; or, you could take the bus to San Antonio de Areco and spend a night there and go to an Estancia on the second day; and, or, you could take a train/day trip to the Tigre Delta (& San Isidro) or a Ferry 1 day or overnight to Colonia in Uruguay.
Lots of wonderful 2-3 day trips - find a good guide book and then review what looks most interesting to you and your son on the Fora - through the Trip Reports on Fodors and Search on TA, for example. Such varied opportunities for great times. Enjoy yourselves.
