WARM WINTER GETAWAY

We live in the DC metro area and want to go away for 5 days at the end of January for a quick respite from the cold and snow. We have two children (ages 6 and 10) . We would fly out of Dulles or Washington National. We would PREFER a NON-STOP flight and we would like to go someplace that is beachy or at least pool friendly, warm enough to swim (i.e not Orlando where there is the potential for it to be 50 degrees and cloudy). We don't want to spend all day traveling on either end of the trip and really would prefer, in light of all the recent activity, NOT to go to Mexico. Would LOVE to stay in the US or Bahamas, if possible. And, would prefer a 3 hour flight or so.

We are down to the wire as far as timing so ANY and ALL input would be GREAT! Thanks so much!

The problem with the Bahamas in January is you run the risk of it being cool (sometimes to cool for swimming) as the chain is fairly far north. You could try Providenciales in the Turks & Caicos. It's a bit further south but the average daily high temperature is still only about 80 F. (FYI - the highest temperature ever recorded in the T&C's during January was 85 F.)

To get warmer weather you need to go further south. Try Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica or perhaps Grand Cayman - they can probably be reached non-stop from DC and are about 4 to 4 1/2 hours flying time from DC.

Obviously, the further south you go the better your chances will be for warmer temperatures during January.

You are going to have to make some concessions either in warm temperature or increased travel time if you are going in January.

There's no place in the U.S. that is truly beach & pool weather in January. You need to go further south. Jamaica would work.

Too bad you've written off Mexico because that also fits and has lovely weather in January. There are no problems (like I assume you are referring to about drug cartels in the border towns and cities like Juarez or Monterrey) in the beach resorts along the Mayan Riviera, for example.

Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands count as technically being the US (as far as travel docs required).

Just returned from Punta Cana, great beach weather all week.
Lots of hotel options there.

Heard from several friends that Riviera Maya (Cancun, Akumal) is cooler than usual once again this January, so glad we decided on Punta Cana this year.
