If the primary source in my city for restaurants is Yelp, why not just use Yelp?

*Which btw I've had pretty good luck with, certainly better than TripAdvertiser.

Nope. It is so risky to depend on an AI for your itinerary. We all know that AI is not precise about all your questions!

Enjoy your trip, but do not depend on AI!

Hmmm, I don't think I will use it blindly. It can generate some ideas or destinations that I might not aware of, but I'd rather do my own research than completely use AI to plan a trip.

I recently discovered ChatGPT. I'm super pleasantly surprised at the amount of detail that it can generate from asking it one simple question! I would happily rely on AI to generate a holiday itinerary for me!

Welcome to Fodors. I'd be very very careful using ChatGPT/AI for travel planning/information. From my observation Fodors is pretty consistent deleting posts that are obviously AI. IME/IMO many of them are complete crap. Long, flowery language, totally unrealistic suggestions, and obviously no 'real world' knowledge of the places 'it' is describing / recommending.

If I could get the AI option off my computer permanently, I would! Loathe the wretched, intrusive thing!

I would most certainly not be using it to plan any trips - and as Janisj says, there have been some doozies created for and posted by gullible people.

Likewise for AI. It is helpful to cut a swathe through the forest of travel options, or help me see things from a different angle, but I don't use it for any precision trip details.
I couldn't agree more . AI is a very useful tool for formulating a 'top down " itinerary. As an exercise , I recently used the facility on booking.com and Expedia to provide a "second opinion" on a possible forthcoming trip to Mexico where I had received a lot of guidance on the Fodors Mexico forum. I was surprised at how easy and quick it was to first ask general questions e.g "suggest a one month itinerary for Mexico" The answer were, unsurprisingly , predictable. But then asking supplementary and more specific questions e.g off the beaten track places, secluded beaches , indigenous villages, I was impressed with how quickly the responses came back and how useful they were.

Being booking engines they are clearly there to sell hotel rooms but this was not an intrusive feature, far from it.

Advantage of AI are many- "instant gratification" , - no waiting around for other to get around to posting replies. It seems unbiased in that there were none of the usual dogmatic responses found so often in travel forums; AI seemed to respond to the actual question being asked rather than the oft repeated responses found in many travel forums. I like that it answers the question I am asking not, as is so often that case in travel forums, a question someone else thinks I should be asking.

In terms of selecting accommodation , I found it helpful in filtering out options but frankly the booking engines do that pretty well anyway. I doubt I would use it to select restaurants but then I tend just to find these when at a destination just by wandering around rather than relying on TA or similar.

In essence , I find it a very useful tool when planning and it is just that , another tool to use. IMO it would be as foolish to rely on it entirely as it would be to ignore it completely.

AI for trip planning sounds cool! It could be super handy for new travelers or those who want a quick plan. Personally, I love digging into research when I plan a trip, so I'd probably stick to doing it myself.

We deleted two inappropriate posts by a travel agent. Those posts led to a discussion/dispute about forum moderation. Those four posts were also deleted.

Note: We do try to keep the forums an Artificial Intelligence-free zone and do delete posts that appear to be AI-generated. We want members to receive real life information and recommendations.

Thanks Moderator 1. I didn’t see the fracas, but agree a discussion ON AI should not be contributed to BY AI.

I might take some information from AI but I won't be depending totally on this. Before making any final decision, I would ideally take advice from real people who have visited that place in person.
