The redwoods in the SF area (Muir Woods), do'nt even compare to the redwoods in the Santa Cruz mountains. The roaring camp steam train is a fabulous tour through the historic redwood forests.

Also, 17 to 85 to 280 will take the same amount of time, if not more than simple taking 17 to 280. Andrea, you will plenty of time to see the sights in SF. Being that you are coming from Australia, I would not shortchange your trip by not visiting San Jose. In addition to the Tech, Egyptian, and Children's Discovery museums in San Jose, my little always like visiting the Happy Hollow Park and Zoo, which is a petting zoo in Kelley Park.

Andrea,
If, by the time you get to San Francisco, you have yet to see giant Sequoia trees, I'd take the opportunity. Drive over the GG bridge to Muir Woods in Marin County and show the kids REALLY BIG trees. On the way back, stop in the headlands above the Golden Gate to take in the view and show the kids the WWII era gun batteries that protected the harbor.
Then park at the northern end of the bridga and walk out over the Golden Gate.
That would make a great day!

oh my gawd it's the SJ vs SF argument again!!!! These people have only 2 days to see all of SF or as much as they can cram in! Don't suggest they go to SJ for an entire day and miss out on SF sights known throughout the world.

How many world travelers come home with pictures of SJ? How many with pics of SF. Case closed!!!

Andrea - Another option for redwoods is Big Basin State Park - I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet. It's just outside of Boulder Creek off Hwy 9 in the Santa Cruz mountains. It's a bit of a drive, but I think it's worth it.

Since you are coming this month, it is very likely that we wont have much rain yet. On the off chance that we get a storm while you are here, I would not recommend going to Big Basin because Hwy 9 and the road to Big Basin are 2 lane, mountain roads and prone to slides. If it has been storming, a trip to Henry Cowel State Park in Felton would be better. Roaring Camp is right next to Henry Cowel. Your kids would probably love the stream train ride through the redwoods.

If you decide to go to Big Basin, the best route is Hwy 1 north to Santa Cruz, Hwy 17 north to Scotts Valley and follow the signs to Felton, Hwy 9 north to Boulder Creek. Once in Boulder Creek take Big Basin Way into the park. When leaving the park, you can go back into Boulder Creek, continue on Hwy 9 which will take you into Saratoga and out to Hwy 85.

Why all this arguing? Andrea is coming all the way from Australia. Therefore, it only makes sense for her to see as much as she can of our wonderful state, including San Jose. Andrea, some previous posters have given you some excellent suggestions for places to see in the San Jose/Silicon Valley area. Don't worry, you'll have more than enough time to see both San Jose and San Francisco.

We stayed in the marina district on Lombard street. Lots of motels. We stayed at the Pacific Motor Inn - Adequate, $100 per night including tax - booked on Internet. Convenient to public transportation. Easy drive to the Golden Gate Bridge

I'd stay at the Hyatt Fisherman's Wharf if that was an option. FW is very conveniently located, with fun things for the kids to do and very little homelessness. Also, the hotels are newer up in the Hyatt area, so bigger rooms. I stayed there with 2 kids and the rooms had 2 double beds are were plenty big. Any of the chain hotels will probably have double beds as an option. Just stay away from the SF B&B's, now they are small.
