I do agree with Times Square. I don't think it's as tacky as it once was. However, most people still make it a point to wander by in the evening.

spiro, I was interested in your list in that the Grand Canyon isn't there. It also wouldn't make my list of 50.

I agree that there should be separate lists for natural and man made attractions.

I don't think there's anything especially thoughtful about this particular list but that's not surprising. I agree with some, disagree with others.

I must say I do love the Jefferson Memorial. It's my favorite place in DC - so beautifully situated and a pretty building also.

I don't have a particular problem with any of these inclusions. Would they be the first 20 places I wanted to see? Probably not. Do the 20 places belong on a larger list? Absolutely.

As for Disney World... I have absolutely zero interest in any Disney movie and, even as a child, pretty much hated them. But Disney World? If you can't have fun there at any age, then there is something wrong with you. Seriously wrong with you. The food is good (some restaurants in the resort are better than good). The hospitality is great, especially considering the size. It aims to be larger than life and usually achieves it. It is the single most well-concieved amusement park or resort complex in the world.

I don't get the OP's outrage. It was a mildly hyperbolic headline on a travel website of 20 iconic places to see in the US. Not the only places to ever visit. Or a ranking of all the places to see and their relative value. Get a grip.

I think the list is credible and representative. Do I agree with every pick? No, but most are arguable. I suspect each of us could come up with his or her own that would be different but also arguable.

There are a lot of strip clubs. And some of the best meth in the country.

Portland, Rose Garden, Pittock Mansion, Chinese Garden, Japanese Garden, Powells Bookstore, Coffee everywhere-- Food was great!!--right nearby is Mount St. Helens, Mt. Hood, The Coast, Columbia River Gorge, Fruit Loop--all doable as a daytrip.

Why is it on the list? I think the things on the list are REPRESENTATIVE of the places. I mean really, do you think the actual Hollywood sign means they think people should go stand under the sign. I think they mean the area and what it has to offer in general. And so Portland Maine would represent the New England Coast - and that should make a list of the twenty best places in the US.

BTW Fodor's editors it's "Grand Central Terminal" not 'station'.

I think the problem with the list is the use of" the places to see before you die" giving those places more importance.

Holy crap, I just looked up Disneyland to see how much it costs to go - $92/person for 1 day. I know there are discounts and various things, but OMG, that is a pricey outing. A family of 4 is into it for almost $400 before anybody has even eaten anything for the day.

Just to be clear, Disneyland is in California and Disneyworld is in Florida. Disneyworld is the one that made the list.

Portland is a pleasant, walkable city with good restaurants and proximity to the spectacular scenery of the Columbia River Gorge and the Oregon Coast.

Nytraveler, your total misunderstanding of what Times Square is and what it means to most people is legendary here, but I have to ask -- when was the LAST time you visited Disneyworld?

Calling Times Square "a bunch of light bulbs". Is like calling a Hawaian beach "a big pile of sand".
