Advice on Driving from Boston to Cape Cod
Hi, I've read with interest (and now some trepidation!!) re: driving from Bost. to C.Cod. We are renting a car out of Logan at around 2pm on a Sat. in August, and driving to Brockton to stay that evening. We will then drive from Brockton to Cape Cod on Sunday sometime. Can someone "in the know" give me some ideas on how much "gridlock" we can expect on either of those days? I've heard lots of "Saturday" advice, but not Sunday. Also, was wondering which route to take on Sunday from Brockton to the Cape. (and how much time it will take on Sunday). I know how to get to Chatham, just wondering the best route and times to travel to that busy area. The following Sat. our car needs to be returned to Logan by 1:30 p.m. Would a 9:30a.m departure from Chatham give us enuf time? Thanks for ALL of the wonderful advice you've been sharing!

Do you have to go to Brockton? It seems out of the way and not your usual tourist destination. From Logan to Boston you take 93S to 128N to 24S. Shouldn't take more than 40 minutes.
But from Brockton you can get on Rt 24 S and then hit 495 S which should lead you to the Bourne Bridge.
Or you can weave from Brockton over to Rt 3S and head over the Sagamore Bridge to Rt 6 to Chatham.
On Sunday morning you won't hit traffic using either route. Every one is where they want to be usually on Sunday mornings. Sunday afternoon getting off Cape is a different story.

Thanks bennnie------how is Saturday a.m. for getting off the Cape? (btw, Brockton was the only place on short notice that I could find a less-than-$200 motel for Saturday nite) I'll paste your directions---thx again.

Since rental changeover day is on Saturday, you will have an hour to two backup on a Saturday to get over the bridge. Since Boston is only two -two and a half hours away from even the furtherest part of the Cape (Wellfleet, Truro, P'Town) you should be fine. Leave by 8 a.m. and you will save your selves much frustration.
Sunday coming on to the Cape is not usually a problem. Many "weekender's "are leaving, not coming on!It's too bad you can't come directly to the Cape, for by 4 or 5 most of the people are already here, and it isn't too much of a problem getting down 6.

Colette - be forewarned that Brockton is a far from desirable place. I'm guessing that you are staying at the Holiday Inn at the Westgate Plaza. Its right off the highway (Rt. 24) - not sure how nice a place it is. Consider the Holiday Inn in Randolph, or a hotel in Easton or better yet just drive all the way to the Cape. By Saturday afternoon the traffic will have died down considerably and you can make it to the Cape from Logan in about 2 - 2.5 hours. The real gridlock happens Saturday morning.

Thanks to capecodshanty and bennnie (again) We're staying at the Radisson by Westgate---used to be a Sheraton. I'm hoping it's not a really bad neighborhood? I'd be out $95 if I cancelled, but if you think it's too bad of a neighborhood I'll forfeit! We couldn't find anything for Sat. nite on the Cape OR on Rt3 down through Plymouth. I'll take your advice if you have time to respond again! Also, I'm thinking we'll leave Chatham the following Sat. around 8 a.m. or so. Thanks much!

Your right- The Cape just won't book a one-nighter in season!! Sometimes you will luck out by calling an individual towns Chamber of Commerce, and one of the B&B's or inns, if they are not booked -but that's at the last minute. Hope fully, it won't be too bad-
Enjoy Chatham tour the Lighthouse if it's open!

Not much to add to good advice already given. Tune in to 1030 on the AM dial, they give traffic updates every 10 min all day. That way you can plan on alternatives (there are a few) if either bridge is blocked. Traffic should not be a problem going in the directions you are going.
From Logan, come out of airport and go thru the Ted Williams tunnel to 93 South. Take this to 24 South and you should have directions to your hotel.
From Brockton, 24 South to 495 South to bridge. You can go over either Bourne or Sagamore bridge. Listen to traffic reports to choose. All things being equal, Sagamore then Rt 6 gives better access to Chatham. Should take 2 hrs.
Incidentally, Brockton is not that bad. Has a "bad name" because it is largely a blue collar town.
Leaving Chatham early sat am should be ok.

You've gotten good advice but I would encourage you to definitely leave Chatham no later than 9 a.m. on Saturday. EArlier than that and you can be sure you'll make it to Logan on time.
Brockton will be o.k. Drove by the Radisson the other night. Not in a bad area. Just off the highway. Ask them to direct you to Charley Horse's for dinner. My family went there the other day for a baseball team lunch and had a blast (like a chuck e cheese).
Enjoy the Cape---we LOVE it.
