Alaska Cruise
ok - I know this forum is not for cruises but will post on both. Two couples in their very very early 50's are considering an alaskan cruise to celebrate 3 50th birthdays in June. Its short notice but one of us has a very unpredictable work schedule and you just can't plan too far in advance as a result. We'd like to find a mostly adult type of ship that doesn't have the totally dressed up dress code for dinners as we're more the casual types. Anyone have a suggestion on a cruise line or ship? Looking for at most a 7 day cruise again, due to the work situation. Thx

We traveled on the Holland America ship, which is not the mammoth size that some of the other ships are. The average age of the passengers is probably early to mid 60s. They do have the dress up dining room, but have enough other options if you don't want to do that. The cruise portion of our trip started in Seward, Alaska and ended in Vancouveur, BC. The first two days were spent sailing and included trips through College Fjord and other glacier areas. Our stops were at Sitka (we chose to go salmon fishing here), Juneau (we took a float plane to Taku Lodge for a salmon bake - my favorite activity), Ketchikan (saw the very touristy Lumberjack show - fun none the less). It was our first cruise and was a favorable experience.

We personally love the dining options on Norweigen... last summer Alaskan Inside Passage on the Star. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I personally feel getting a balcony cabin is essential for Alaska.
Have fun!

Look for glacier Bay itineraries. Holland America and Princess control these. Both are nice cruise lines and do Alaska very well. princess has personal choice dining which we think is more laid back than traditional dining times. Enjoy you will love it

I sailed the Diamond Princess last August and loved it. You don't have to dress formal at dinner in the main dining room. They also have a variety of other restaurants onboard also - including the buffet that you truly do not have to dress for. Mostly 50s+ crowd. Also, if budget allows a balcony cabin is wonderful ! Great for the day 'at sea' and at night while sailing.
