Annapolis restaurants

Hi! I am in Annapolis/DC area during all of next week and while I know DC well enough, don't know much about Annapolis's restaurants. Any help will be appreciated. I don't bias any kind of cuisine so long as it is cooked well Any specific advice on unique breakfast locations are also welcome.

Thanks!

Chick and Ruths Deli on Main St for breakfast. You might see a few politicians there.

Will you have a car? Do you just want downtown restaurants?

Well, as a start..

Lemongrass on Main St..excellent Thai food..upscale restaurant and glasses of wine are a little pricey.

Kyma..tapas ...also on West St. Fairly new, but seems to be doing well.

If you are into beer..Rams Head on Main. They make their own beers and have a good reputation. If weather is good you can eat outside at the back.

I'm falling asleep right now..so will check in again tomorrow. Let us know if you have a car.

Don't forget to cross the Spa Creek bridge into Eastport. Lots of great food there.

On Severn Avenue, O'Leary's for excellent, high end seafood. A few doors down, right on the water, is Carroll's Creek, for a somewhat more casual seafood experience. And at the corner of Severn and Sixth, the Rockfish also offers good seafood in a more modern setting.

Steak lovers are taken care of as well, with Ruth's Chris on Severn Avenue. I personally prefer Lewnes a block over -- a local steakhouse with an exceptional wine list.

Across the street from Lewnes is the Boatyard, a sailor hangout with decent American food covering all the bases.

A bit off the beaten path, but worth the effort, is the Wild Orchid -- creative fine dining. And if you really want a local scene, try Davis' Pub (Chester and Fourth) -- awesome burgers.

The beauty of all of these places is that you can (almost) come as you are, because the sailors most certainly do, although a lot of people (me included) make a little more effort than that for the nicer places.

We like La Picola Roma for an upscale evening and across the street is Joss's for sushi. Both are on Main Street.

Pussers is on the waterfront, with Caribbean-style, primarily seafood.

Galway Bay -Maryland Ave downtown - Irish Pub with separate dining room. Lots of interesting options on the menu - try to cornbeef poppers for apps.

Main Ingredient - Bay Ridge Ave - will need a car as it's not walking distance from downtown - great for b'fast (one of the few places that serve b'fast other than Sunday Brunch). Good for lunch/dinner also but go off peak times or expect a little wait.

Paul's Homewood Cafe on West St - again will need a car - very popular local place - Greek as well as American.

Carroll's Creek - nice outside deck overlooking Spa Creek/downtown/Academy - great Sunday brunch - a little pricey.

Hi guys, Fabulous suggestions so far even though I have only been able to google the suggestions in the first couple posts (I will do the rest in the next 24 hours).

Mincepie, Yes, I will have a car and four whole days in Annapolis (I can obviously drive out of town if and when I like it).

Glad to hear that you'll have a car.

For wonderful Spanish food try Jalapeno's on Forest Drive Parole. One of the best Italian restaurants is Cafe Mezzanotte - Severna Park. The infamous Rams Head is actually on West Street about two blocks away from Church Circle. Quite an assortment of beers and the food's pretty good. The last two times I was in Galway Bay I told the manager how unhappy I was with dinner and he gave us a gift certificate. We used it and guess what, dinner was still pretty bad. I gave up!

You might want to try some of Maryland's infamous crabs. There's Cantlers over in St Margarets. An easier place to find is Mike's on Riva Road by the bridge and has good crabs.

With the exception of wonderful doughnuts at Carlson's (West Street) I don't get out for breakfast too often.

Davis' pub does have awesome burgers but it also serves huge shrimp cooked with vidalia onions and that's awesome too.

For a special, wonderful evening out I love Paul's on the South River and Northwoods in West Annapolis - not cheap but really good.

What foods do you like?

I second Jalapeno's and Carlson's does have the best doughnuts in town. Too bad about Galway Bay - I've enjoyed brunch and lunch, but I guess it's a toss up. If you want quick no frills Italian or just pizza - try Bella's in strip shopping center with Graul's supermarket on Taylor Ave. It's one of those where you order at the counter and bring it to you, but much better than other's around town.

LN, I like all sorts of ethnic cuisines including spanish, japanese, indian, thai, etc etc. In fairness to responses to my initial post, I simply haven't found time to do any research on the suggestions --yet-- but I will look them over before I leave town. From the promptness or variety suggested, it appears that Annapolis has many good options (which is good).

Galway Bay is still a favorite of ours. Our favorite place in downtown Annapolis though is Cafe Normandie. Just look for the French flag outside.

All right, people, I have a listing of restaurants I will go to, thanks to you all). They are: Breakfasts (Chick and Ruths and Carlson's Donuts/Thai Kitchen); Lunches (Galway Bay, Jalapenos, Cafe Normandie); Dinners (Cantlers, Pusser's). I might switch lunches and dinners, and will pick one or two locations while there.

Still need one more breakfast location. Any nice, local bakery recommendations?

Much appreciated.

The Main Ingredient on Bay Ridge has great breakfasts. The owner has a catering business in Annapolis and everything she serves is good!

If you enjoy shrimp you might like the Carabineros at Jalapenos - it might be stupendous.

If you really want to get a sense of local flavor a trip to Cantlers with a spot on the riverfront deck is a must. There often are waits, but you can walk along the doc with the crab tanks and the lift they use to deliver bushels of live crabs up to the kitchen.

Great steamed crabs.

Hi ComfyShpoes! Folks have made some great suggestions on here and I second most of them.

One of my all time favs in Annapolis is Lewnes's.

Fantastic food and superb dining experience. Check it out:

On a side note for locals since you probably wont be eating any *cake* on your trip, the Main Ingredient makes excellent, excellent, excellent, excellent cakes. I am so serious. Mmmmmmmmm.

Have fun!

Oh ComfyShoes please enjoy the cake then!! You wont be sorry!

Weve only ordered cakes for parties, etc and I was thinking you might not be in the market for a giant cake on your journey.

Silly me though, I dont know what I was thinking when I posted that. I mean, who isnt in the market for a giant cake while traveling, right? MMMMMMM!

They might sell single servings in case youre looking for just a taste-but why limit yourself on vacation!

Have a great time, friend, and Ill expect to read about that cake in your trip report!

Hi

Remembering your unique breakfast question I thought I'd better get back to you.

We had breakfast yesterday at Chick and Ruth's on main St and somewhere around 8:30 the gong went off - everyone rose to their feet - and the Pledge to Allegiance" was said by everyone!! I was surprised and also delighted as everyone was quite serious.

As to breakfast - it was good! I don't normally like breakfast potatoes but theirs were great nice and brown with lots of onions. Hubby normally doesn't eat scrapple but they had Rapa and he tried it and was pleased. Maybe breakfast was better since we've already gotten to the important things!! The place was packed.....

Is Treaty of Paris (in one of the historic inns) still good? I ate there 15 years ago and loved it!
