Are is their anyplace to stay in Lake George that's not a dump?
My sister and I got this brilliant idea to take the kids where we used to go sometimes when we were young kids - Lake George, so I started surfing the net to look for lodging and all I can say is eeeeeeewwwwww! I guess I just don't remember the places being so, well, so dumpy, but then again we camped there. Since sis is 8 months pregnant, and we're going sans husbands, camping is out of the question. Also since this is a midweek, non splurge vacation, so is the Sagamore.
My question is, can anyone recommend a place that is somewhere between the Sagamore and the cheesy motels with the ubiquitous green carpeting that keep popping up when I try looking?
Help, we really want to to the stroll down memory lane thing, we thought it would be fun for the kids and us, but I'm beginning to wonder if the whole place isn't a dive!

nina,
I can't remember the name anymore, but there is a place in Diamond Point(?) that is right on the lake, you can see the Sagamore from the beach. There is a huge beautiful house and grounds, then some small motel type cabins. They have a beach, the cabins are wood paneled and have big windows and small tables and chairs. We went one September and we were the only ones there, so I remember it being great!
If I find the name I will post but try looking for places in that area, hope this helps.Lola

Thanks Lola, I'll try that. I don't mind rustic, in fact, that's what I'm looking for, I'd also like clean and possibly a bit of charm. Can anyone recommend anyplace? Thanks again.

One other thing to look into is condos. I don't remember where we stayed, but one weekend we just wanted a quick trip away and I did a search on condos on Lake George - and we ended up in a GORGEOUS condo right on the lake. Try that avenue as well as hotels.... Good luck - that sure is a pretty lake...

Nina (or anyone else), did you ever find what you were looking for? We're considering a long weekend at Lake George this summer and I'm looking for what you were looking for last year. Does it exist?

Just the thought of Lake George is making me shiver. LOL! We go almost every year and stay 45 minutes north of the vilage at the Silver Bay Association. It's like a resort with YMCA accomodations. Beautiful. Nice people. Free kids programs and swimming lessons at the lake. Great crafts, like pottery and jewelry making. And classical music and wonderful lectures. So what makes me shiver? Well, my husband has to go every year and I can't stand going to the same place every year. Show me the world! Also, the food is bad - cafeteria style - good for the kids. The real kicker is there is no air conditioning. Some years it's not so bad. But, last year was a killer. We spent the week taking naps and the baby was soooo cranky. And no building has a/c so there's no respite from it. I have four kids and it was just sooo hot and exhausting.
Most acommodations are lousy, except for the inn. they are simple dorm-type rooms. There's no place off campus to get good food. We've stayed at a few other places on Rte 9 and they're the same. Bad food, rooms and no a/c.
There is a dude ranch in Warrensburg - forget the name. Maybe that's an idea?
Good luck - it is a gorgeous place. And if you're not going in the dead of summer, Silver Bay will fit the bill.

Fort William Henry is not a dump. It is centrally located but it is expensive compared to other hotels. Do not stay at the Surfside. My stay there ruined my vacation. It was filthy. Many hotels have deceptive brochures so be very, very careful!
