Asheville-best time of year to visit

What is the best month to visit Asheville? (We're from L.A.) We love hiking and sightseeing, but don't want to come during a "rainy" season. We heard that October is a good month because of the turning of the leaves. Or is summer or spring better?

In Asheville, you've really got no choice but to come during the "rainy season", because in a normal year (unlike during the drought we've had for the past 5 or 6 years) it usually rains at least once a week.

However, don't let that stop you! Mid to late March is a nice time to visit, as are all of April and May, and the first half of June. After that it starts to get muggy and smoggy, and stays that way until the end of September -- although Asheville tends to stay about ten degrees cooler than almost all other Southern cities all the time. It really just depends on what you'd call hot.

Late September up to late October is another good time to visit, especially if you're wanting to avoid very cool to cold weather. It starts to turn cold in November, and usually stays cold until mid-March, which cold snaps occurring into early April.

A benefit of visiting during winter though, is the very clear air. You can see much further from overlooks and scenic drives than you can during summer, when humidity and smog combine to severely limit visibility. A benefit of visiting during summer is that you will usually find at least one festival going on, no matter when during the summer you come.

I'll go against the grain here, October is a great time, except that's when everyone goes. You might consider the summer months as it is always a bit cooler in the Mts. & quite enjoyable. We particularly favor the Chimney Rock/Lake Lure area east of Asheville. If flying into Charlotte, it is right on your way. I would pick June, lots of things blooming & the weather will be moderate.
