Best Colorado ski resort for one day.

Never been to Colorado. Going for 4 nights in February and plan to ski as a gift to my boyfriend (28 yrs). Very confused as to which ski resort is best for slopes as well as night life. The problem is that we can ski for ONLY one day and one night, Saturday. Should I plan Vail, Breckenridge, or Winter Park? Also would appreciate a recommendation of a nice hotel at one of these resorts that would be near nightlife and offer relaxing luxuries like hot tubs. The other 3 days we will be in Denver and Boulder where we already have hotels planned.

Winter Park isn't known for nightlife.

In Breckenridge, we liked the Hunt Placer Inn B&B.

If it is a one night splurge, go to Vail or even Beaver Creek. But not a lot of night life in BC. You didn't indicate which weekend in February. Breckenridge would also work.

I agree with fmpden on Vail or BC as a first choice. Have a great time.

Vail is the obvious choice, with Breckinridge as the second choice. Winter Park and Beaver Creek won't have much night life. .

Thank you very much for the recommendations! I am actually going on Feb 16, Saturday, so I am worried that it will be very crowed being a holiday weekend. I was thinking of some night life because it is my boyfriend's birthday and we wanted to celebrate. However, maybe we will be so tired from the wonderful skiing that we won't want to go out!

If it were me, I'd go to Keystone, stay at either the Lodge or the Inn and make a dinner reservation at the Ski Tip Lodge. Best restaurant in Summit County!

the great thing about Breckenriddge and that the ski area is right in town. So restaurants and night life are all right there. You may want to check out Purgatory or new name Durango Mtn Resort. Durango, CO still my favoritie, no lift lines, and wonderful hotel and restuarant accomodations, 20 minutes to town, or you can stay at the mountain condos.
Vail is upscale and wonderful skiing and Vail Village is fun and easy to get around in on the trolleys. Winterpark is maybe the bet skiing, but this year we are having record lows in temperatures and Winter Park is always a little cold anyway. I personally love skiing there and there are condos all over the place. You are an hour out of Denver with Vail, Breck and Winter Park, so you could always hit the high life, on the way to or from the airport. (I'm assuming you are flying) Durango is out of that loop on the otherside of the state.

If you ski at Breckenridge and want a lesson ask for Joe. My daughter's brother in law. He's the best.

I am afraid that you were coming Presidents' Day weekend. That will be the single, busiest, weekend of the ski season. It even surpasses the Christmas/New Year week. It is so bad that season passes are restricted. I would encourage you to go as far as Beaver Creek. BC is not very accommodating of day skiers so the pressure from day skiers is much less. Avon is decent place to stay and there are some fun places that the locals favor up or down the road in Minturn and Edwards. Ask for directions. My favorite local hangout in Avon was the Brass Parrot but it was closed and stripped bare when we were there in December.

Dyann, before you get too worked up about this decision, if you've never been to Colorado, and you're going to be skiing for one day and enjoying one evening, you really can't make a decision where you choose. All of the resorts are beautiful, all have great skiing, and all of them have plenty to do for one night. If you become a repeat visitor, you will eventually figure out which one fits your personality best. As you can see, everyone here has their idea of which one is "can't miss".

When I first visited Colorado I had to get to Vail. Then I tried Breck, and eventually fell in love with Keystone. So much so that I bought a home there.

The point is, pick a place that fits your budget, ski for a day and figure out how you want to celebrate the birthday. I guaranty you'll have a great time.

I'm sorry. I meant to say you can't make a MISTAKE whatever you choose!

Have a great time!

I have gotten some great info here, thank you all! This is going to involve some serious thinking. We may have to consider skiing on Friday instead of Saturday due to the holiday weekend. Also, thanks to Ann Marie's link, I found my missing question! I had actually posted that question first and lost it because I did not post it under '"Colorado".

Are you really good skiers? My husband spent the day today in Vail and LOVED it. He said I wouldn't like it b/c there's a lot of expert trails there.

Oh, and it was one today. Meaning one degree! He said he was freezing but had a blast.

Vail is massive. You can find the slopes that matchs your ability and interest. The crown jewels of Vail are the back bowls. While these appeal to very good skiers, some of the bowls will have a groomed center which an average immediate ski can handle. The only drawback to Vail especially on the front side is poor skier separation. Black, blue and green slopes are intermixed. Which can make a beginning skier very nervous if they have to cross a black slope on a green trail.

In answer to your question, Karens, my boyfriend is an expert skier but I am more beginner to intermediate. I have gotten extremely helpful advice here! It seems, as Grasshopper says, any one will be impressive for a first time visitor. I am actually from Maryland where the skiing is very different. We may actually "drive" from Boulder to the resort. Probably not fly as was assumed.

I agree that for one day, you can't go wrong with any of the ski areas, except maybe Eldora, which is very close to Boulder, but is too small for you.

Having said that, since you're driving from Boulder and this is a gift to your BF, and you want nightlife, I'd choose Vail. Every expert skier wants to ski Vail at least once. It would make a more impressive gift IMHO. I can't recommend lodging there, as the only place I know is the Sonnenalp and it's very pricey.
