best family hotels in san diego

Im looking to find a great hotel in san deigo for a May trip with my husband and daughter. We'd like something on or close to the beach and a great location for attractions. The ones I have in mind so far are:

Loews Coronado Bay Resort
Hilton San Diego Resort
Catamaran Resort Hotel
Hyatt Islandia
Paradise Point

Any feedback on these or others would be great! Thank you.

the catamaran is in a great location - 1 block from the beach, right on the bay (try to get a bay view suite if possible) plenty of restaurants around and the pool area is nice. it is just an average hotel in regards to rooms, service, etc. if the price was right, i'd stay there.

Hi..
I would do either the Catamaran, Paradise Point or the Sea Lodge Hotel in La Jolla which you do not have listed but oceanfront and great for the family and Expedia has it for $159 a night..they have a several great restaurants on the water and you can beat LJ.. the water is really clean and it might be warm enough to go in..

I would also look at Pacific Terrace. You can't get any closer to the beach and most definetely the Sea Lodge in La Jolla. Loews is lovely but in Corondao Bay. Paradise has been renovated and I hear it is lovely. Be sure to check out trip advisor. Another one I like is Humphreys Inn but not on the beach but great location and on the island.

WRITESTUFF and others....My family and I have resevations at Paradise Point for a bayside bungalow. Please be kind enough to tell me what you liked & did not like about this resort. Is it really in good condition since being refurbished? Is it near a Nordstrom? Did I read correctly that electric carts are available for getting around? Any & all help will be most appreciated!

I just read in the paper this morning that Child Magazine spent six months surveying more than 340 U.S. resorts to see which were the "most family-friendly" -- Loews Coronado Bay Resort in San Diego is #4 on the list.

We stayed there six years ago when our son was 12. We loved it. The area is a little more remote than some, but we had a car and it wasn't a big deal.

Hi Writestuff
I was thinking of staying at Paradise Point or the Dana Inn. How are they for location , cleanliness, and beach sports. What room fit a family of 5? I also have three kids (10,11,13). What sights did your kids enjoy in San Diego?
Thanks
Denise

hi vernonhill...just got back from another trip so i'm just reading your post. we had to get two rooms for our family of 5. we asked for adjoining rooms but for reasons unknown they split us up which didn't sit well with me. the resort is lovely but we had issues namely the fact that they didn't honor our request as we were traveling with kids. also didn't appreciate being charged for everything - $5 a day to play basketball, $10 for the gym, $5 for mini golf plus club rental...i just feel a family resort doesn't need to be so petty when it comes to these things. the food was okay but again overpriced. we drove to nearby Pacific Beach and ate a great breakfast every morning at a place called Konos for $5 a head. it was a real surf hut - great people watching!!another good place is The Eggery on one of the main drags. also drove to coronado and rented bikes. you can take the ferry over and get the bikes right at the pier. that was a lot of fun and coronado is beautiful. i stayed at the loews a few years back and agree that it is lovely and a better bang for your buck. with a car it's not all that far. skip sea world - at 13,11 and 10 my kids weren't all that impressed. go to balboa park - lots to do to occupy a day. san diego is just a beautiful city - you can't go wrong. just be very clear up front with paradise point as to your needs if you choose to stay there. let me know if i can help further.

p.s. paradise point isn't on the beach. it's about a 7 minute drive.

Hi WRITESTUFF,
Thanks for getting back to me. After reading your review and trip advisor I am leaning towards The Dana on Mission Bay. Have you or anyone else stayed here? I read that the Bay View rooms are much newer than the Marina view rooms.
Did you see the shows at Sea World? Did you take your kids to see The Wild animal park or the zoo? We only plan on visiting one.
Thanks for your help!!
Denise

HI..
Dana Hotel is a old Hotel that they added a new marina wing but the prices are way too expensive for what it is...
the diesel smell from all the boats going out fishing in the early morning waif into your room..$389 a night for the newer marina rooms and you will have to get 2 rooms..old rooms go for around $239 a night..
It is right across the street from Sea World and you would have to drive everywhere.. I would not stay there..
Catamaran Hotel would be a better choice for you and all your children..
Have you considered the Sea Lodge Hotel in La Jolla? It is oceanfront and the kids can swim in the gorgeous clean water and boogie board and snorkel, kayaking etc.. they have room specials at $159 a night.. ljbtc.com
As far as Paradise Point goes they are very accomadating...Did you specify adjoining rooms in your reservation with either the Hotel or Expedia or similar? Kono's for breakfast in PB is one of the best deals and good food..Glad you found it...
Good Luck to you and your family!

I agree there are some nice places up in la jolla. and again, look into the loews coronado bay. we did request adjoining rooms at paradise point but they said they couldn't guarantee it which i find ludacrious when you're traveling with young kids. we saw the shows at sea world. they were ok but my kids weren't that impressed. i hear the zoo's great - i'm just not that big of an animal person (zoo smells drive me crazy

definitely do some biking on coronado and hang out on pacific beach. it's really nice there and my kids loved watching the surfers out every morning.

have fun!
