My original plan was to go to a hotel in walking distance to certain museums. My traveling companion has suggested we might want to "live" nearer a night life or shopping center so, at the end of the day, we could easily walk to a place like the Marketplace and not have to worry about late night cab or transportation.

Any suggestions or comments? Thanks, as always.

I often stay at the wonderful LENOX HOTEL on Boylston Street. It's about two blocks from the Prudential Center mall, and only about a block from all the shopping and restaurants on Newbury Street. In addition, two of my favorite Boston restaurants ( ABE AND LOUIE'S for unbelievable steak! and ATLANTIC FISH for, well you can tell by the name) are both just across the street. The "T" is two minutes away, and connects to the red line at Park Street, so exploring Boston is very, very easy either by foot or subway.

What kind of night life to you think you'll want? It's nice to stay near the waterfront but Back Bay has as much, if not more, going on in the evening. Both areas have lots of people walking around and are really not that far from one another.

You can only spend a certain amount of time walking around Faneuil Hall marketplace before you've seen everything and now many of the stores are national chains which can be found anywhere.

In addition to the Prudential Center and Newbury Street, you also have Copley Place in Back Bay. But Newbury St. has the most interesting shopping.

I agree with cw. Not to be rude, but I am originally from a suburb near Boston, and even my 22-year-old daughter quickly tired of the Faneuil Hall marketplace on a return trip home. I think Back Bay is a great place to stay, and has a fairly decent nightlife to offer.

Just wanted to add that some other larger hotels to look at in the area are: The Marriott and The Westin which are both in Copley and both connect to the Prudential mall; The Sheraton which is IN the mall; The Copley Square Hotel, and the Fairmont Copley. Almost forgot- on the other side of the Prudential, close to Mass Ave, there's The Hilton Boston.

Some hotels in the Back Bay area are fairly close to the Theatre District - about 10-min walk or 2 stops on the T. Like others said, I don't know what type of night life you are thinking of, but there are always plenty of shows going on in the Theatre District, esp when the Fall season begins.
