Charleston during Spoleto?
My husband and I want to take a romantic weekend trip next spring for our first trip without our daughter. We had fixed on Charleston and then realized that the Spoleto festival would be happening while we were there. Aside from the issue of exorbitant hotel rates, we are concerned about how will the festival will affect our trip. I would love to hear from anyone with thoughts on what Charleston is like during Spoleto.
I am also curious for hotel recommendations. I want to get the nicest room we can in the historic district for around $250 a night. Thanks in advance!

Check out GoTravel's excellent trip report for ideas on hotel selection.
I have been during Spoleto several times. It is crowded and restaurants are busier. However, you have some great entertainment options you might not had.

cmcfong is exactly right. Yes, it will be more crowded and more expensive, but there are some excellent entertainment options that you wouldn't have otherwise. $250/night should get you a very nice room, even at that time. There is a wonderful B&B service that I've used many times. Here is their website.

This was my favorite one of the couple I've stayed in. It did have twin beds but they might push them together.

Also, I have stayed at the Meeting Street Inn several times and it is very nice!!!
You should make your reservations soon I would think if you really want your choice of places to stay then.
Charleston is absolutely one of my favorite places to go!!!

I live in Charleston and love the city during Spoleto...inspite of the large crowds. Agree with other posters in that you need to book NOW as the town does fill up during those 2 weeks. I would check out the Meeting Street Inn and Elliott House Inn - both are nice B&Bs. Andrew Pinckney Inn is also a nice B&B. As for hotels, there the Mills House (a Holiday Inn property but you'd never know it as there are no HI signs) on Meeting Street (historic section) which should fit in your budget. Charleston Place is nice but it will be in the $350-$550 range if they have any availability. There's also a Renaissance on Wentworth Street again walking distance to Market and other sites of interest.
