Closest good skiing to the DC area?
We've just moved here and would like to find a good place to ski within a few hour's drive. Any recommendations? Although he's got plenty of experience, I'm a complete beginner so we'd need to find someplace with a good "bunny slope" too.

The Washington Post has a review of all the local ski areas. I've only been to 7 Springs, which is probably the farthest away from DC, but we meet relatives from Ohio there, its about an even trip for all of us. For the money we spend there, I sometimes think we could take a long weekend to Colorado! They have lots of slopes, can make tons of snow, and have a good restaurant (Helen's - make reservations). It gets extremely crowded though, but I think all of the ski resorts near DC do.

I think the closest place to Washington would be Wisp in Maryland. Snowshoe in West Virginia is also a great place, don't know how far it is from DC.
Wisp's website is:

whitetail is only about 90 minutes from Rockville Maryland and the easiest trip to make, however, snow is spotty. Seven Springs in Pa. is a couple of hours away and is ok. Snowshoe in WV is really good, but a vit difficult to get too --probably 4.5 hours, and the last hour is mountain driving. but its worth the drive, if you are going for a few days. if you are a beginner, I'd take a middle of the week trip to whitetail first, and see how you like it. not much of an investment, and you only need to take a day off from work (I suggest midweek as the weekends are really crowded)
