colonial willilamsburg to bwi via MD senic route
We will be leaving Williamsburg on Sat. 9/27/03 and don't have to catch our fight home out of BWI till early afternoon on Sun. 9/28. Looking for suggestions on a senic way back and somewhere to spend our last night thats within 1 1/2 or 2 hrs from BWI.
We will have started our trip in Washington DC and driven down through Virginia. Would like to spend the night near water.

Ok, heres what you do....take a nice scenic drive through VA and up through southern MD to Annapolis for the night. Annapolis is a great city and on the water. Lots of history, restaurants, etc... plus its only a 35 min to drive to BWI for your flight. (best to get driving from VA out of the way first).
Leaving Williamsburg =
Take I-64 West towards Richmond. Take 295 North toward Washington. (prob the same way you came to get down there). Right before you reach I-95, get off at US 301, Exit 41 i think.... you want to take the first exit and go north toward Hanover. Basically you will take US 301 and follow signs to Baltimore. Its a scenic route that takes up through some horse farms, through bowling green, past Ft AP Hill, theres a mile marker past AP Hill on 301 that shows you where off in the woods there where John wilkes booth was killed. 301 takes you over the potomac to MD.(no toll, only commuters going into VA pay toll). 301 goes up through La Plata and Waldorf. ONce you get to Route 50, take it east to Annapolis. thats the only other scenic route that I know of, very easy if you look on a map. The other way around the bay is going thru Bay tunnel/bridge which costs money and can be major delays as some is only 2 lanes,etc..

I agree w/ bluestructure. The traffic in No. Virginia/So. Maryland can be really horrible so I would check out of Williamsburg and try to get north of DC long before afternoon rush hour. then you can relax and enjoy Annapolis.

I like the "DelMarVa" peninsula too. How about traveling by way of US 13, & over to Crisfeld and catch a boat to Tangier Island for the night? (There's another ferry service, I can't remember what town it's in, further south than Crisfeld MD)
Or similar to "bluestructure"'s advice, drive the Colonial Parkway up to Yorktown, and take Rt 17 up to US301. Maybe stay in Fredericksburg area, or continue to Annapolis. Or keep heading north of Baltimore and stay on/near the Cheasapeake maybe like at Havre d'Grace or nearby. Or Baltimore. Happy Travels!

Thanks for various route info. Crossing the Chesapeake Bay Brigde tunnel looks interesting on the map. It would be on Sat. Would we get a lot of traffic mid to late morning? I'm afraid staying overnight on Tangier island may leave us too much of a drive for Sun. AM. Would route 17 to 301 be more scenic than retracing our steps on 295/64 going down from DC to Williamsburg? About how long will it take to get to Annapolis from Williamsburg going either 17/301 or 64/295/301 ? Would driving up 13 to 50 into Annapolis be more enjoyable? Is the area around Havre de Grace worth my time driving up that far for the night? About how much time would it take me from there to get to BWI? So many questions, sorry!!

I'm not sure about the drive times ... whenever I've done it, I've left lots of extra time, then slow down if it looks like I will be able to see other things.
Each way from Wbg to Annapolis have some advantages ... less tolls is one of 17/301. But you might like the eastern shore. Not an awful lot that I know of up towards Havre deGrace, but I think there are some bay-front inns in the area ... I was stationed near there years ago, but back then, when young & foolish, my travels were more oriented by where the good bars were! Now that I'm old & foolish I have differnt criteria! But I would suggest searching, there MAY be some things in that area to interest you. It used to take me about an hour to BWI ("Friendship" back then) from Perryville/Bainbridge.

Wmbg to Annapolis via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel will be the longest but most scenic trip. Easily 6+ hours. From Wmbg you have to drop SE to Norfolk to pick up the CBBT and you can encounter some bad traffic on 64 at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. Still, if you wanted to make a complete day of your trip, I'd go this route. It won't leave you much time or energy for enjoying Annapolis.
The other 2 routes will take you approximately the same time (4+ hours). Your trip will stop being scenic on 301 once you hit the La Plata and Waldorf area in Maryland. More suburban and congested as you head towards Annapolis.

tunnel route is at least 2 hrs + longer than the other 2 routes. Williamsburg to Annapolis shouldnt take u no more than 4 hrs in length with traffic. Ive driven it many times. US 17 route has some small towns and slower speed limits, thats the only draw back there. oh yeh, god forbid there be an accident in/around the tunnel.

If you choose to take Route 13 across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, stop at Arpino's Clam Bar. Hopefully, they will still be open. The restaurant is nothing fancy, but the clams are great. The owners have a clam farm, so you won't find anything fresher. The roasted and baked clams were excellent!

I like the suggestion of using the Chesapeake Bay tunnel and heading up the eastern shore (provided you don't mind the extra driving).
Instead of staying in Annapolis though, another option would be a small town with cozy B&B inns on the Eastern Shore. I recommend St. Michaels. Lots of cool old inns there, plus some good eating...
