detroit loop to Upper Peninsula

After posting a previous note Ive decided to land in Detroit and make a loop towards Mackinack Island and stay at the Grand Hotel.Ive got 4 nights,so any thoughts on the other nights as far as places to see stay would be appreciated.I think the tallukameah(Sp) falls look interesting,as does Muislin as well.I dont want to be driving forever, and dont know how long itll take from detruoit to reach the Grand. Thanks again

It will take you about 7 hours to get from the Detroit Airport to Mackinaw island. Congrats at staying at the Grand...I believe you will really love it.

Did you mean Tahquamenon (sp)Falls? They are lovely, that's a wonderful plan. You can also enjoy Whitefish Bay and the Pictured Rocks area. Those are both in the UP, not sure on drive time from Mackinaw though.

Metro airport to Mackinaw City is about 300 miles, all by freeway. If traffic is light, that is under 5 hours (4 hours with a heavy foot). Holiday weekend traffic can add a couple of hours.

The ferry to the Island takes about 20-25 minutes, but you may have a half hour wait for the ferry. The Grand is about 5-7 blocks from the docks depending on which ferry service you use.

Mackinaw City to Tahquamenon Falls is 1.5 to 2 hours. Was "Muislin" "Munising?" Tahquamenon to Munising is a bit less than 1.5 hours.

With the exception of I-75 up to Sault Ste Marie, the eastern UP roads are pretty much 2 lane roads with 55 MPH speed limits. They are usually not too bad, unless you get caught behind a couple of vehicles pulling travel trailers. I call that a double parcheesi.

Another Detroiter agrees this sounds like a nice trip. I've made the drive to the bridge several times, and it really depends how much traffic you hit. Friday afternoons/evenings heading North are the absolute worst.
