Does anyone know if you get credit for not using half of a round trip fare ticket?

I am wondering if I purchase a round trip ticket but then return later, months later if I can get a credit towards future purchase. I know you can do this frequently with a round trip not used but what if it is only half used?

I may be mistaken, but the airline actually has the right to CHARGE you for a one way ticket if you try this. I doubt they ever do, but I'd take the savings earned by buying a roundtrip instead of a one way and keep my mouth closed.

Barb's right... No way will they give you credit. In fact most airlines have a Use it or Lose it policy in effect now anyway which would make any part of an unused ticket worth nothing!

Cindy, it depends on the fare structure of the ticket you bought--if it's a low priced/discount/apex/nonrefundable/
whatever fare, your round trip probably cost less than the regular one way fare. IN that case, the posters here are correct, and don't even mention it to the airlines. But, on the off chance that you bought a high priced nonrestricted fare, you probably could get at the least credit toward future travel. If it's a genuine rare full fare ticket, you could conceivably get a refund if you don't use one end of it because such fares are really two one way fares ticketed together, not a "round trip".

Unless you have bought a full fare ticket and call the airlines ahead of time, you will not recieve any compensation.
