Does anyone know the best rental car company to use for prices and convenience to the airport?
We will be in Kauai the end of April next year for the first time. I would like to have our rental car reserved for when we arrive. Could you tell me by experience the best way to get the lowest price and the convenience of that agency to the airport. Thanks

Sheila. the airport in Kauai is very small and the rental cars are located all over the Island. Hertz and Avis have their location at the top of Waimai canyon. The shuttle ride is a good fifteen minutes. Budget and Dollars lots are on the north end up by the Princeville hotel. I think there shuttle takes about 20 mins each way. The local Hawaian agencies have locations right at the airport. I think the names were KarKauai or Mahalo Motors. Have a great time!!

The last poster is correct - several of the major national chains have locations right at the airport. ALL of the chains have lots at the airport. You check in at a desk right outside the terminal, hop a shuttle for a 2 minute ride, get your car, and go. Just call the car rental company you usually use or do a seach at fordors.com or travelocity.com or whatever for rates.

I think Skip had too many mai tais ! The major firms are within minutes of the airport & run shuttles. My experience for check-in times has been 10 minutes best to about 30 minutes worst. Many say go get the car as soon as you land, then go back & retrieve baggage. Seems to work OK.

Thanks to all that have replied. I have never rented a car so I don't have any experience. The one time we needed a car was in Maui and the other couple took care of it. I did a Fodor search and could not find any other suggestions. If you have rented a car in Kauai, which company did you use and would you recommend them? Also did you book directly with the company before leaving home. I am hoping to get a convertible for the best price but I am not sure how to go about doing this. I am not a troll just not a very seasoned traveler like most on this board. Thanks for any help.

All national rental car companies are fine (Avis, Hertz, Etc.)
An easy way to compare prices is to go to www.sidestep.com, select Rental Cars, the location, car type and dates and it will search all companies showing their best rates.
