Dreadful Virus Contracted Logan-Oakland 7/21 jet blue flight .

Have never seen both my children so ill with combo food-poisoning and flu symptoms in the extreme for the last 24 hours. Can anyone tell me what might be going around and how I should treat them?

My brother and his bride-to-be are hosting us -- wedding is in 1 week, many other family members arriving later in week. With two sick children sleeping, moaning, and throwing up into bowls all over her house, I feel like I need to gather up the sickies and flee, but children literally too sick to move.

Help!!!

You need to call a doctor though..

corwin~ it sounds like an awful stomach bug similar to what my sister's family brought with them from Sad Diego to Alaska a few years ago at about this time.. all we could do was give the kids Pedialite and the BRAT diet, bananas, rice, applesauce, toast and no dairy whatsoever.
My family had it too. Weakened muscles and all we did was lay around for three days, it was a nightmare.
The only one who didn't get sick was my husband for some reason(he claims beer saved him).
Seriously, consult a dr. asap, or the ER for advice. Dehydration in the kids can be life threatening. J.

Good grief corwin how horrifying. And jetset, how awful for your family. I would contact a doctor or the ER immediately corwin. I say that as about two years ago I had a similar problem and thought it was just some small nonimportant virus. Late afternoon I was taken to the ER by ambulance and was there until around 3:00am the next morning. I was given several serious of IV's for dehyderation etc. I felt so stupid that I hadn't gotten medical attention earlier in the day..I would have saved myself my family and a neighbor a lot of grief and worry.

Please get medical care for your children immediately!!

we are keeping them hydrated -- no food. yes, the doctor's getting a call in the morning. thank you, lovies.

guess we won't be going to santa cruz or big sur before the family arrives. will hope for day trips from home base in three days are so.

frankly, i do not want to get the wedding couple sick! they are so busy juggling work and millions of wedding details. i cannot believe this is happening.
i'm going to find something to disinfect the upholstery and indoor air with....

Oh corwin, I can only imagine the stress and worry that you have. Terrible! Nothing is worse than having your little ones ill, and being away from home is not good. And than the family wedding and worrying about the wedding couple etc..I am so sorry.

May I suggest besides everything else you get some Lysol Spray, or use alcohol and wipe down door knobs, phones, computer mouse etc. I have always read that door knobs etc. can really carry germs.

I pray that your children will be alright by tomorrow and that you and no one else will come down with whatever this is.

Please post back when it is possible. Prayers and good thoughts to all of you.

Disinfecting the upholstery? Why?

You need professional diagnostic help to determine exactly WHAT the problem is before expending lot of wasted time and energy on remedies that may be useless.

Just because they are thowing up does not necessarily mean they have "food poisoning" either.

get them to a doctor.

Have they been diagnosed with food poisoning?

The normal gestation period for food poisoning is 24-36 hours after the food has been injested and I hate to say this but your children should be in a hospital if it is indeed food poisoning.

Food poisoning is life threatening for children.

Get to an ER/doctor ASAP. You can call a cleaning crew to come in while you are gone.

There are many different sources of food poisoning, with different symptoms and incubation periods. Many types, even Salmonella, can be treated successfully without hospitalization if hydration is maintained.

I think that is the tricky part with kids Anonymous is that it is so hard to maintain hydration which is why hospitalization is recommended.

Most cases of food poisoning are from common bacteria like Staphylococcus or E. coli.

Sorry that your family is sick, but instead of posting on a travel board, you really need to call a dr.

Sister is just lifting her head after a similar bout. Doctor said as many fluids as possible (Sprite, actually) and don't worry about food until its over - or you're hungry again.

Sorry. How dreadful.

Salmonella is an ancient term. Staph or enteric bacteria is usually suspect, but for heaven's sake don't blame the airline! Could be a rotovirus, both my kids had that and lost their insides for 3 days. One had to be in hospital for IV, but there's no cure and antibiotics don't help w/viral infections. Most adults are immune to many viruses that kids pick up, don't panic or worry about disinfecting everything, just use normal precautions. However, they should be given a checkup, don't know they're ages or if fever is present, but pump the fluids and NO food yet.

Let me add my empathies! How horrible!

Keep those kids away from the soon-to-be newlyweds! Isolate them if at all possible! Don't let your brother or fiancee clean up after the kids. Don't let the kids be in a car with anyone but you and your wife. You might want to consider moving to a hotel after the kids are better, so that, if you get it, you won't be exposing anyone else. I've heard people are conagious before showing symptoms.

Not to be discouraging, but we once had an intestinal bug whip through a family vacation at a beach house and every single person got it by the end of the week. (There were 9 of us, including relations from across the country.) I guess the good news is that everyone got it to different degrees, some with just a bad feeling that lasted a few hours. The worst had to go to a clinic for iv infusions....

I really do feel sorry for. We had the same thing happen before our daughter's wedding.

However, why did you mention the flight...how do you know that is where they caught it? To be quite honest, I would move your family to a hotel and keep the children isolated in the bedroom with plenty of movies(after a visit to the doctor of course). This could really mess up the wedding and honeymoon.

Linda, the reason that I specifically mentioned Salmonella, despite its being "an ancient term," is that was what one of my kids was clinically diagnosd with, and nevertheless did not require hospitalization.

Since most intestinal bugs are spread by fecal contamination of the hand-to-mouth (and eyes and other orifices), its important to keep the kids isolated as much as possible, but this means not touching things -- and washing their hands thoroughly and cleaning up places like bathrooms and, indeed, doorknobs that might be contaminated. I have to agree with the consensus about actually removing them from the presence of other family members rather than having them "throwing up into bowls all over the house," as the OP put it.

anon- I meant that salmonella was used to describe all enteric contamination. It is indeed one of many, but if they are infected with a food borne bacteria, they are not at all contagious.

That "throwing up in bowls all over the house" thing was kinda creepy to me. Aren't there enough bathrooms?

Vomit in a bowl? Gross.

I assumed (and hope) the OP meant toilet bowls.
