Goodness, this is not at all true. The fecal-oral transmission route is typical of most enteric diseases, with food being merely one of many possible sources of infection, and doorknobs another.

I would leave it up to a medical professional to determine the reason of throwing up.
I know when my children where smaller, even a simple cold made them throw up sometimes.
Isn't diarrhea another symptom of food poisoning, which you don't mention?
GoT, children don't always feel an "episode" is coming, and when they do, they are not always strong enough or quick enough to run to the nearest bathroom. We always put something by their beds, like a small garbage can lined with plastic bags.

NOT TRUE!!! My mother was place in isolation in the hospital when she was diagnosed with salmonella. Anything coming out of her body could be contaminated. If you are the one cleaning up after them, be sure to wear gloves at all times.

GoT - Staph. Aureus food poisoning symptoms typically begin within 4-6 hours after ingestion of the toxin contaminated food.
LL - >40,000 folks in the US get Salmonella each year and we see all flavors including Typhoid here.
See your pediatrician or internist.

I'm beginning to wonder why all of us in Microbiology 1 weren't sick all the time. We were routinely growing, culturing out and identifying e coli and staph aureus. Geez, I don't remember being all that careful either!
My dh had what I'm sure was food poisoning within 5 hours of a meal while we were on vacation on the FL east coast. I've never in my life seen anyone so sick and was on the brink of taking him to the ER. It continued all night, most of the next day, and even a day later, he was too wiped out to drive the couple of hours back home. Although I had no thermometer, he felt as if he was running a slight temp too during the worst of it, which I didn't think was compatible with food poisoning symptoms, but found out differently when I got back home to my computer. When you say flu symptoms corwin, what do you mean? I do understand the bowls...my parents used small wash basins by our beds. Far better than the trip down the hall to our bathroom!
Hope your kids are better now, corwin, and that they've seen a dr if not. It's tough getting sick in a city you are unfamiliar with!

Since people are discussing how long after ingestion it would take for symptoms to occur, I'm still wondering what the kids could have eaten on Jet Blue that would have given them food poisoning. Unless Jet Blue has changed its "meal" service all you can get are packaged processed snacks: chips, cookies, nuts, etc.

My guess is that it is an viral bug, based on past travels when my kids were young and the experience my sister's family had while traveling from California.
I would never advise anyone to take any advice except from a medical professional.
I remember the one night of meeting my brother-in-law in the hallway. I was exiting the bathroom, and it was all he could do to get in and close the door.
I joked to my sister the next day that it was the easiest visit ever, no meal planning, plus the added bonus of a five pound weight loss. However, I would hate to ever go through it again.
My older son slept next to the b.r. door in his sleeping bag one night..the next day, a borough tax assessor knocked on the door, asking questions. When he asked if he could look inside my home, I said "I really don't think you want to come in here. We have a hospital this week". He smiled and made a quick exit.

"Germs" (viruses, bacteria, etc.) can be picked up in many ways other than through food, including exposure to surfaces like tray tables and anything else in the entire airport that the kids might have touched before eating those sanitary-packaged snacks.

All I know from plane rides is not to eat the pineapple on Hawaii bound flights, because every time I have, I have been sick. Coincidence? Maybe? Paranoid? Definitely.

cute starsville, no i didn't go to med school, but I have a bio/chem degree and no food poisoning is not "contagious" it is "communicable" big difference. Very few food poisoning cases are due to Salmonella, check it out, duh.

Of the nine "food poisoning" pathogens tracked by the CDC, Salmonella accounted for over 40%, more than any other cause in 2004.
Truly, a travel board is not the best place to get advice about communicable diseases; I hope that corwin has moved on to some genuine medical personnel!
