Driving from SFO to Monterey via Santa Cruz

I'll be doing this drive in the early a.m. on a Sunday morning after arriving at the San Francisco Airport from an overnight flight. From looking at Rand McNally the route appears to be 101 south, 92 west, 280 south, 17 west then 1 south. Is this correct? I recall that this is a more scenic drive than just staying on 101 for most of the way down. Thanks for your help.

Yes, very scenic...especially when you get on the 280 - 92. There a huge redwoods that are amazing. (I think they are redwoods). I did this same drive last July...I'm from Cali and never knew how beautiful this part of Cali is.

Much more scenic with some potential stops along the way, too.

Stay on 92 to Hwy 1 which will take you to SC. You join hwy. 1 at Half Moon Bay, and once past that town you are in open countryside along the coast. It is not a much longer ride and is much more scenic.

Yes, I agree - the most scenic route is staying on 92 to Hwy 1 and heading south from there.

Taking 280 to 17 to 1 is also nice and quicker than the previous route. Both are much preferable to Hwy 101.

I live in the area and agree with going on over to Half Moon Bay if you have the time for a leisurely drive down the coast.

A good stop would be the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay. It looks like it belongs in New England and is on the coast. Nice spot for late breakfast or early brunch.

Thanks for the replies. I may consider the Half Moon Bay route. I've been to Half Moon Bay before and remember it was an easy drive out from the city, so that would definitely be an option.

I was thinking about stopping for breakfast in Santa Cruz. Anyone tried Zachary's or Linda's Seabreeze Cafe? I was going to the Silver Spur but I found out it's closed on Sundays.
