First Time Newbie in S.F.

Hi everyone!!

At the end of the month, I will be taking my boyfriend to S.F for his 26th b-day. He has never been there, so I want to make it a great experience for him. I have visited once, but I stayed at a friend's place in San Raphael. Which meant we hung out mainly at his home and barely went into the city

Anyways, does anyone have any cool ideas to do once the sun goes down. He has hinted that he would like to see some live entertainment.

Thanks for everyone's help. There seems to be a lot of informative and kind people on this site.

Gracias!!

-Rita

It's waaay after sundown for me - but one idea is Asia SF. There's a bar that's hot right now called Novo, i believe? South of Market. You will get lots of good ideas from Fodors...tomorrow.

For dancing, one of my coworker's loves to go to Ruby Skye (very expensive, very loud nightclub with LOTS of dancing...and mostly DJ's. You should be able to find their website for more specific info.)

For live bands, there is the Starlight room. Very mixed crowd of young and old. Great view of the city at night--top of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in Union Square. Again, expensive, but the band is normally very good--start out playing jazzy oldies and then morph into contemporary mixes.

Another quirky San Francisco treat is the Tonga Room in the basement of the Fairmont. Live band, rain indoors and a tiki theme. Fun! Lots of families, and a mixed crowd.

Another fun dance place that often has live music is Bimbo's 365 Club in North Beach. Eclectic mix of music, and they have a website that you can check to see what band is playing while you're in town.

If you pick up a SFWeekly newspaper as soon as you get to town (free, on lots of streetcorners) you should be able to check out who is playing at what clubs while you're there.

Two other places that I love in SF are Cha Cha Cha (in the Mission or the Haight)--my favorite Tapas restaurant in the city, and Foreign Cinema restaurant for something different--sit outside on the patio and enjoy an old film while you eat (food is okay, french, and a little expensive.)

Have fun!

Another place to check for hip entertainment for the under 30 crowd would be the Bay Guardian, I believe it has a website.
