We used Flagstaff as our base when we went to GC and it was really nice. {we drove from sw Colorado.]I don't care for Phoenix...to big.

You should think about flying into phoenix though...way more flights and better deals. We stayed at Fairfield Inn and it was nice. Lots of good restaurants to eat at in Flagstaff too.

Hope this helps...

Flagstaff is closer to the sites you want to see in AZ. Is your other question which airport is closer to Las Vegas? I'm not sure but a map will probably tell you. There are far more direct flights to Phoenix, however.

Could you gly into Begas, then drive to Arizona? Phoenix would give you the best choice of flights, and would probably be less expensive, but Flagstaff is closer to Vegas. the drive frome either to Vegas is long and it really doesn't make much sense to drive there and back.

Flagstaff would be OK to base yourselves, but personally I'd rather stay in Sedona. You can still drive to the GC and back in a day, probably the Painted Desert thought I haven't done that in a day from Sedona. Then instead of driving to get to Sedona, you're already there.

How much heat do you want and which part of October? Phoenix temperatures will still be hitting 100 until October 15. After that, they will be in the 90s. Flagstaff is cooler anytime of the year than Phoenix. Flag is also prettier and three hours closer to all the other places you want to go.
