We stayed at the Harraseeket Inn this June. It was very nice and very reasonable. If I remember it is only about 30 minutes or less from Portland. The Inn has a great "Tavern" in it that we ate at and they also have a nicer resturant where we enjoyed our "free" breakfast buffet.
Another good place to eat lunch is the Jameson Tavern right next to LLBean. The Inn is about 2 blocks from LLBean.
Have a good trip!

Another plus for the Harraseeket Inn. It's a large resort type of Inn, but maintains a very New England charm, and the Tavern is indeed cozy and welcoming. We stayed early last Dec. and took advantage of the shopping and loved LLBean's discount store in the lower part of Main. St. You will not be dissapointed

Thumbs up for the Hampton Inn, quiet and clean. The Freeport Inn could probably be classified as a "roadside motel", but it is perfectly adequate, clean and quiet and with a great coffee shop. Can't really go wrong in Freeport, even the "Super 8" is just fine.
