I didn't explain what was going on well. The book needed to be returned to a display case in the room next to the one we were in. Several people had been in that room and, for the safety of the collection, the room had to empty for the case to be opened and the book replaced.
I don't think I have ever seen something like that happen, so it caught my attention.
Speaking of guides, a tour was available later in the day. That would have added to our visit, but we didn't want to stay that long. If we had checked out times before we went, we might have planned our visit differently.

Not that it matters, but actually I think it was this, "Among its masterpieces are an early fifteenth-century French illuminated book of hours, The Belles Heures of Jean de France, Duc de Berry."
