Great itinerary for 3 full days staying at the Grouse Mountain Logde in Whitefish, MT.

I will be in Whitefish, MT for the first 3 days in July. I will have those days as full days as I will be arriving on June 30 and leaving on July 4. Any great suggestions as to what not to miss or do during my stay??

Assuming that you have a car - Glacier National Park is easily reachable. You can drive all the way across on Going-to-the-Sun road, then make a loop by heading south through Browning, where the Museum of the Plains Indian is worth a stop, and then back along US Route 2, which follows the southern border of the park. If you want a nice hike in the park, Avalanche Lake is an easy stroll and very beautiful.

Heading south, the drive along either side of Flathead Lake is very nice. On the west side you can stop and visit Montana's only winery - I seem to recall the name is Mission Mountains or something like that. A bit further south, though still easily reachable in a day trip from Whitefish is the National Bison Range where there are many other types of charismatic megafauna in addition to the bison.

Thanks for the suggestions! We will have a car. I would like your opinion on whether it would be best to drive the Going-to-the-Sun road, or if we should take a tour. I didn't know if the driver would be so taken by the narrow road that they would not enjoy the scenery as much. What do you think?

Do your own driving. You can stop whenever YOU want.

I really like to go over and back because the scenery is totally different depending on wich direction you are going.

In July, the cherries should be in season around Flathead Lake. I haven't been on the west side of the lake but on the east you can stop and buy them or pick your own. Believe it or not, picking is a lot of fun. What a beautiful area!

Connie is right - do your own driving - and she's also right about the difference in perspective depending on which way you're going. Like the road to Hana, Going-to-the-Sun has been a bit overhyped in terms of difficulty. It's easily negotiable by anyone who can drive 20 miles an hour or so on a narrow road and avoid running into the ditch - no big deal.
