Great Smoky Mtn. Railroad, Old Salem--What to do???

I will be visiting my son who lives in the Mooresville area. We are looking for a nice day trip. He is new to the are so has not ventured out to much. We did do the Biltmore last year and enjoyed that.
In anyone's opinion how is the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad tour? How about the rafting with it?? Or in Winston/ Salem the tour of SouthernHighlands house??
Any other ideas or suggestions would be welcomed. We are willing to drive up to three hours from the area he is in.

There are lots of things you can do in the mountains. The GSM Railroad is very nice. The best route in my opinion is the Bryson City-Nantahala route. Though I have never gone whitewater rafting, it looks like great fun, we usually stop alongside the road and watch them going by. I have lots of website links I can give you for the extreme western NC mountains, as well as the north GA mountains, if you want to send me an email I'll send them your way.

I agree with Justmom that the NC mountains are great. And I have rafted the Nantahala, which was great fun. However, from Mooresville you are looking at an EXTREMELY long day-trip, as Bryson City is several hours west of Asheville.

You should definitely consider Old Salem in Winston-Salem for a day-trip. Here is a link to the website: http://www.oldsalem.org/index.htm
I am not sure about your reference to a Southern Highlands House. I lived in W/S for 14 years and never heard of that. Nonetheless, Old Salem is a great place to walk around and spend a day. (You could also consider visting Reynolda Village near the WFU campus, it has some nice shops, a great casual restaurant--Village Tavern, beautiful grounds, as well as the Reynolda House Art Museum.)

Actually, Bryson City is only about 90 minutes west of Asheville. Still a fairly long day trip from Mooresville (about 3.5 hours one way).

Thanks to all of you for your reply's as it has been so helpful.
I assumed that the GSM Railroad was real close to Ashville but if it another 90 minutes i agree it makes for a fairly long day.
I can always do it another time with a little more pre-planning to stay in that area for a night.
I think that the the Old Salem in Winston- Salem sounds good. Thanks "Beach Dweller" for the link. I did make a mistake by calling it Southern Highlands as that name is actually a web site - Southern Highlands.org which links yo up to all kinds of activities to do in North Carolina.

Winston Salem is charming. Try for tickets to a concert at the NC School of the Arts (drama, dance, music). Chicken pie at the tavern and moravian sugar cake from a wood fired oven in the Bakery are great. Be sure to watch the artisans making beeswax candles and horseshoes.
We love NC!
