Help me act like a local, please
I have been to NYC as a tourist but now would like a weekend of local fun. Can you tell me where to go and what to do to make this happen.
INFO--
For entertainment--my boyfriend and I could hit a museum and a show (something like DeGaurdia or the Donkey Show--which we have seen in NYC)-sugesstions?
We love to go to streetfests or open market shopping or Antique Markets (isn't there one in the Fashion District?)
For Eats--we have dined once Village and REALLY liked that area--any sugesstions for good food there? I heard about a place called Craft--any good? Also we are planning to hit Blue Ribbon on Friday night, the day we arrive since we are getting there late. We then want to hit a cool bar-swanky. Any ideas? Have you heard of a bar called CREAM--where is it?
What would you do to fill a Saturday day, night and late night? Give me your ultimate, action packed day!

Avoid Midtown and stay downtown.
Wear dark colored clothes.
Walk fast and don't gawk at the buildings/strange sites/strange people.
When you come to a Don't Walk sign, ignore it if there are no cars coming. Don't heed the signs, heed the traffic.
Learn how to fold your newspaper length wise so you can read it on the train.
Don't take out twenty people with your back pack on the train. Take it off and set it between your feet.
Treat anything above 14th street with disgust.
Don't dwaddle.

The antique market is on 6th ave between 24-27 every Sat & Sun. The real collectors get there at 8am & walk around with coffee. Here's info on it & a few others

Locals also go food shopping on the weekends. Here's info on the open air food markets. The one on Union Square is very popular on Sat morning.

Craft is very good but hard to get a reservation. For cool bars look here

Thanks mclaurie--Thank you. I live in Chicago so I think I have teh city walk down.
Can you all expand on the off-Broadway options--Am I better to look at TIXs for these? I am thinking about EXONERATED? Anyone seen this?

Haven't seen The Exonerated, but I highly recommend the off-Broadway show Omnium Gatherum, a bizarre and fun show about a dinner part on the night of 9/11 with an off the wall Martha Steward type hostess and all kinds of mis-matched people. It's in the Union Square area, where I think you might enjoy spending a lot of your time.

In case you don't know, there are a number of websites where you can get codes to buy discount tickets instead of standing on line at the tkts booth. You can use the codes online, on the phone or in person at the theater. Not quite as cheap as TKTS booth but you don't waste time in line & can use a credit card. A few of these sites are playbill.com, theatermania.com, hitshowclub.com They have on & off Broadway shows. You have to register for free. Just checked on playbill-the show Patrick recommends is not available there at a discount.
Here's a website where you can read reviews etc.
http://www.nytheatre.com/
It says Omnium closes Nov 30.

Have you seen Stomp? Based on the other shows you've seen it might be something you'd like. It doesn't have a typical plot, it's a percussion, um, experience. It's showing in the East Village. You might also see Avenue Q. It's a play about race with muppet-type puppets. Also a little different.
While you're in the East Village, try one of my favorite restaurants there, First. It's on 1st Ave around 10th street. Good food, hip, but not pretentious. For good bars in the area, I like Temple Bar. There are lots of great bars in the East Village, but others could tell you with more authority than I can. Tribeca would be another good area to hit for dining/bars.
I'll add to GoTravel's tips:
don't take out your map on the street
don't wear pastels or anything applique
don't say "hew-stun" street; it's "how-stun" street
don't go out to dinner before 8pm
