Where are you staying, where do you want to go and what kinds of things do you want to do?

Are you sure you can't get a car?

ride bikes

take organized tourist bus/van tours

use shuttle from the airport

stay in a town with things to do that are walking distance (Lahaina comes to mind)

The public transportation in Maui is poor and I would not reccomend spending any considerable time there with out a car. If the reason for not getting the car is financial, I would be willing to bet you spend more in altrnative transportation than if you had rented the car in the first place. Taxi to Waliea will run you over $40 and over $70 to Kaanapali. A rental car can be had for under $160 for week!

We are staying at the Maui Coast Hotel in Kihei... We really are looking for a relaxed honeymoon, but are up for anything.

you may have to go with a local rental car agency rather than a big company - i am guessing they (whoeever they is) have told you there are no cars???. do some google searches, if you look for a jeep rental on maui, that will get you to local sites that have more than just jeeps available. I stayed in kihea and needed my car to catch the snorkel boat, hit the supermarket and drive to some beaches i wanted to visit. BUT i was accross the street from a huge beach and walking distance to several restaurants. it really depends on where you are. good luck.
