Walk around lower Manhattan - financial district, South Street Seaport, and walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn Heights. Prospect Park in Brooklyn is far more beautiful than Central Park and the Botanic Gardens are just across the street but there may not be much to see in November. Walk south from Mid-town to lower Manhattan - walk through the garment district, flower district, Tribeca, Soho. Browse on Canal Street and lower Broadway. Chinatown. Great fun but take your time. This is the real New York, to me. The Met is like any good, large museum anywhere - only bigger. Also take a stroll up Broadway from Lincoln Center north. The heart of the upper West side. Walk up to Columbia through Harlem. Grab a snack at Zabars. On the east side, walk up or down Museum Mile along Fifth Ave. Museums open late and free on Tuesday nights, I think.

Absolutely - the first thing you do is cancel your hotel reservation at the Pennsylvania. It is the seediest, dirtiest, grossest, most unsafe hotel in NYC. Stay anyplace else - and I do mean any place! I got stuck staying there once and couldn't get out quick enough.

Hi again, Are you sure that your friends didn't stay at the Hotel Peninsula? That is a great hotel.

Enjoy your trip, Larry. I just got back from a week stay at Hotel Beacon, in a nice residential/retail neighborhood 74th and Broadway. Ellis Island is a must. And we enjoyed the "real" Little Italy in the Bronx (Arthur Avenue). Brighton Beach ("Little Odessa") in Brooklyn was interesting. Buy a 7-day Metro pass. It makes getting on busses and subways a breeze. Oh, and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine was spectacular!

Larry,

I live a block away from the Hudson, and it's very cool. The rooms, at least the ones I've seen are small, but it is very cutting edge, very stylish. Make sure you have cocktails at the Hudson Club - connected to hotel.

Do see the Marathon, even if you're not a sporting fan. You will love it. The best vantage point is 1st Avenue around 60th Street. When the lead runners come off the Queensborough Bridge, the roar from the crowds is simply exhilirating. You will leave hoarse, but better from experience.

And most definitely, take an afternoon in Central Park - preferably on a Sat of Sun. Hopefully, it'll be warm. If not, bundle up, and walk north past Tavern on Green, cut over to Bow Bridge, walk thru the Rambles and admire the views from the top of Delacorte Castle. Walk east and south again to the CP zoo and then to the redone pond.

Enjoy and welcome to my neighborhood!
