The convenience factor is only that you'll be inside the Times Squarea area "zone". This is the area extending for a number of blocks in every direction from the site of the ball drop. After 6 PM or so, access to this are through the closest streets is open only to authorized personnel and folks staying at a hotel withi that area (must show hotel key to the police manning the access points to get in.
The dilemma is that in order to actually be somewhere where you can physically see the ball drop, you'll have to leave your hotel and find a place to stand long before 6 PM (yes you read that correctly - expect to stand there in t he cold waiting for 6-8 hours or longer if you really want to see the ball drop.

Kathy:
We stayed at the Hilton Times Square over Thanksgiving. The rooms facing South have an incredible view of lower Manhattan but no view of Times Square and the views North do not have a view of Times Square. Having said that, this is a very nice hotel and has good service with good value for your money. This is convenient to Times Square but not in Times Square. We would stay there again.
