hotel and restaurant recs needed for Sacramento

I am looking for a small hotel or B&B in Sacramento that is walking distance to the Stanley Mosk (CA Supreme Court) courthouse.

Also, would love restuarant recommendations for an upscale or trendy restaurant in that area..American, French, or Italian preferred.

Thanks

I was in Sacto a few month ago and ate at "The Kitchen". Wow--one of the best meals I have ever had. It is booked far in advance and dinner lasts over 3 hours. Basically the chef makes the dinner in front of you--several courses.

Check out the website thekitchenrestaurant.com

An unforgetable evening! And, no, I do not work for them!

B & B that is nice is the Serling which is at 13th & H. Th courthouse is on Capital Mall? That's M so if you think H to M (5 blocks) is within walking distance then it's a great place. Chanterelle, the restuarant located at the Sterling is wonderful too.

Good Restaurants nearby:

Esquire Grill on the K street Mall near the IMAX.

Morton's of Chicago at 5th & L

Firehouse in old sac.

Il Fornaio right on capital mall.

Frank Fats at 8th & L.

Since you asked about Italian food, I would recommend Biba, generally considered the best restaurant in Sacramento. Biba, the owner, is always very much in evidence (she has a cooking show on PBS, BTW), and the waiters have been there for a long time and are very stylish. The food is absolutely wonderful.

Underhill is right about Biba. I didn't recommend it becasue it seemed you wanted walking distance. But if you'll drive, there are some trendy restaurants midtown:

Paragary Bar and Oven (italian) 28th and N-ish
Monkey Bar/Cafe Bernardo capital(M) & 28th
Harlow's 27th & J

When we were there last June we were at the Hyatt downtown across from the capitol. We walked down to one of the Fats Chinese restaurants about two blocks down the street. We ordered the crispy walnut shrimp I think. It was like a plate full of heaven. The maitre di (sp?) was so nice to us and gave us a free slice of banana cream pie. Lovely place, awesome food, very old city chinese place with full bar. Would go there again in a heart beat.

Hi mdv,

Was just at the Esquire Grill on Sat night and saw this place as I went around the block several times. Thought it looked very nice and was in a good location just across the south west corner of Captiol park. http://www.innoffcapitolpark.com/

Actually seeing it momentarily distracted me from my parking space mission.

BTW the Esquire Grill was very good. Try the spring rolls. MMMMMmmmmmm. Salmon (wild, not farm)was good too.

Had drinks at Marilyns down the block. Looked like there would be live music later but the kings game was on. Lots of people downtown that night.

Across the park (on the North west corner) at 15th an L there is Beer and Books. My friend remarked that it was her favorite combination!!!

I second the Sterling Hotel - it's the closest to what you're looking for. If I were you, I'd stay at the Hyatt Regency which is a 5 minute walk from the Capitol and court buildings.

Restaurant recommendations (all in downtown or midtown):

Esquire Grill (13th&K) - Arnold hang-out, GREAT atmosphere, good food $$$$

The Broiler (12th&K)- great steaks $$$$

Mikuni (16th&K) - the BEST sushi. Period. $$$

Hukilau - funky, fun Hawaiian themed place. Have a mai tai and the Chinese Chicken salad. $$

I remember a great meal a few years ago at a restaurant in Sacramento called La Boheme - is it still in operation?

I think La Boheme is gone; I haven't read anything about it in a long time.

La Boheme is in Fair Oaks and is an outstanding restuarant. Actually it's my DH's favorite. Last time we ate there they gave us the best table in the place because they ran out of tonic for the second time in a row that we ate there. Just was funny. The service was outstanding. Fair Oaks is too far away if you're staying downtown.
