Hotel near Newark Airport
Any suggestions for a comfortable one night stay in July. We won't arrive until 9pm or so and want to stay one night before catching the Amtrak train up to Albany. Would it be easiest and cheapest to stay at the airport or would it make more sense to get into New York that evening and stay a night near Penn Street station? Would welcome advice and suggestions of places to stay.

It depends on what time train you're taking to Albany - and how early you want to get up.
From a hotel near the airport you would have to take the shuttle back to the airport, then get the Air Train to Newark Penn Station
You can pick up some Amtrak trains there - not sure about the one for Albany. For that you might have to take NJ Transit to NYC Penn Station and change for the Amtrak section of the station.

If you can get a reasonable rate at the Newark Airport Marriott, you are on the Air Tran line that takes you to Penn Station. I would compare Penn Station area hotels with the Airport Marriott for the night you are staying.
The Marriott has adequate restaurant and bar.
Although there is an airport Hampton, Courtyard, Hilton, Holiday and Sheraton. You would have to shuttle to the hotel and back to the airport to connect to the train.

It's really your decision and somewhat depends on where you're coming from and whether you're morning people or not. If you're coming from Ca., wouldn't you rather spend the time traveling when you arrive instead of in the morning?
There's an Amtrak station at Newark airport and another at Newark Penn station (different from NYC Penn station). If you can get on your train at either of those stations, it might make sense to stay near one or the other. There's a Hilton at the Newark Penn station that's attached to the train station.
If you'd have to change trains in NYC anyway, why not just stay near Penn station in NY? The Affinia Manhattan is almost across the street and pretty decent.
