If you've never attended a powwow, now's your chance

The Eagle Powwow will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12 at Eastern Washington University, Cheney, Washington. Cheney is a town 20 miles west of Spokane.

A Native American powwowis a wonderful experience, a celebration of native culture.

Grand entry is at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and noon on Sunday. This usually is an impressive procession that always gets me a bit teary.

Hi Pegontheroad, I went to a Powwow for the first time a year or so ago. It was a fabulous experience!

Thanks peg. Powwows are a blast! I love the smell of burning sage. The Stanford Powwow on "The Farm" is going to be May 11-13.

If you are in the area, it is a lot of fun.

I was subbing at a school in Spokane and was talking to a young man whose last name I recognized as being Native American. He told me that he has an Appaloosa horse which he rides in the grand entry at Julyamsh, which is a big powwow near the state line of Idaho and Washington. At the former dog-racing track.

I've never been to this particular powwow because it takes place in July--over the weekend of the 4th, I think, and I've always figured it would be too hot. I'd love to see this young man ride, though.

My favorite powwow is held the last weekend before Labor Day in Riverfront Park in Spokane. Great dancing and drumming and a beautiful setting!

A friend of mine named Chipa Wolf puts on, what is now, The 18th Anual Cherokee County Mother's Day Indian Festival in Canton, Georgia, and I have been attending them for almost every year since 1992. My kids, and now grandkids go too, and all love it www.rthunder.com .

If you've never been to a real Pow Wow, then you owe it to yourself and family to attend one in an area close to you.

We went to the Stanford one in the 90's twice, it was a lot of fun. My son loved the squaw bread, I think that's what it's called.

If you go to a REAL PowWow do not take pictures. My husband almost had his camera confiscated at one in Wyoming. They took our film out. They were pretty nasty. It was an innocent mistake on our part, but they were serious.

Hello Andrew8. I took my grandson to a PowWow guess in 2006 per my 2007 post here on this thread. So he was 15 years old. We had a fabulous day but the most special part of the day is that my outgoing grandson somehow got talking to one of the Indian Chiefs who was the head person of the PowWow. Long story short we were invited to sit on the stage with him and the other leaders to watch the various tribe dances. My grandson was beaming from ear to ear (well so was I actually). An amazing day and I am glad this thread was pulled up as it sure brings back wonderful memories.

By the way, powwow is a Narragansett word.

I haven't had any trouble with picture-taking. Maybe one should ask or at least check out what others are doing.

Actually, the Stanford Pow wow began May 9 and runs until May 11.

Also, as for calling the bread the "s" word- yes it's considered an offensive word on that order. They call it "fry" bread.

Last night was thrilling!

Powwows are held in many places; if you're going to DisneyWorld in Florida, there is one held in Leesburg on Route 27.
