Miami has ALWAYS been safe for 99.9% of visitors. Stay alert as you would in any other major American city.

Agree with Bob.
In well-travelled areas (and I think M.Bch qualifies) Miami is no different than any other large US city as regards safety. Lots of areas that make me uncomfortable to drive thru in Miami, but that's not unique to Miami either.
Have fun, be smart, get tan.

May is the perfect time --guaranteed warmth (or should I say HOT?). Beaches are always busy in Miami, but less so in May than in high season or even in summer. May is one of the "slowest" months so it should be easier to get into restaurants, better rates at hotels, etc. Don't get out and walk around the airport or in certain other areas of Miami (can't imagine why you would) and there will be no saftey issue -- other than watching out for overaged, half-blind drivers on Miami Beach.

Hi Lisa,

I visit Miami Beach at least 4 times a year and I love it! I agree that it is very safe.

Miami has really had an undeserved reputation over the last few years. I too have friends that cringe when they hear I am going to Miami - and like anywhere there are bad areas, but personally, I never miss out on something due to fear or "what could happen"! Have fun.

I've lived here all my life. Now, more than ever, Miami Beach is very safe as are many places inland. Just be aware as you would in any other city. Have fun, it's gorgeous here. Wouldn't trade it for the world!

How would you qualify safety in the Art Deco district for young people (25y old), in particular at night (safe to walk, for example?)

Sorry, I didn't notice the dates. However, my enquiry is current. Hence an updated view from fellow Fodor members much appreciated.

As long as you're not reeling drunk and wandering down dark alleys you will be just fine.

If you are - well - then anything can happen.
