Italian food - Boston

I'm flying to Boston from D.C for just one day, and want to shop for Italian food. Can you advise please on location of the Italian Markets (North End? - I haven't been in Boston in years) - the best way there from Loagn Airport (is the water shuttle a possibility, or is the subway the better route? Arriving at 8:15 a.m. Also, I have to return to Logan for a flight out at 7 PM - what's the rush hour like on the subway line that I should take to the airport? Do you know any especially good Italian markets - buying different olive oils, olives and cheeses. Many thanks - my wife is at Harvard doing a program that day, and I'm playing (it keeps life balanced). Thanks, Joe

The Italian Markets are in the North End. The best way to get there from Logan is the subway, because parking is a nightmare, as is the construction traffic. Hopefully you will be able to carry around everything you will buy without a car!

The blue subway line runs from the airport. Take it to government center. From there I recommend walking through the Faneuil Hall area--you could change train lines and go for one stop on the green line to Haymarket Station, but that'd be more trouble than it's worth.
You will be walking through a massive construction site. Go along the Freedom Trail Route, under the ugly green highway (the construction project will eventually put it underground in a big tunnel). Then turn left. You should run into Pace & Sons, which is a big Italian Market. There is a produce stand next to it. Throughout the North End are many smaller, specialized shops, including Trio's Pasta, Abruzzese Meat Market, Modern Pastry, many more. Just stroll around and enjoy it.

As far as rush hour on the return trip, yes you will encounter crowds. But if you go back the way you came, you will board the Blue Line near the beginning of its route, so you have a fighting chance of getting a seat.

Have fun shopping in my favorite part of town.

Joseph-

Here are some of my favorite places to shop in the North End. For food products, the best places I have found are J.Pace and Sons on Cross Street and Salumeria Italiana on Richmond Street. Both shops have a great selection of cheeses, meats, olives, olive oil, pasta, etc. J. Pace is larger and has a bakery and prepared foods as well, it may also be slightly cheaper, but I'm not positive.

There is a great shop on the corner of Salem Street and Richmond Street that sells spices, grains, beans, and fantastic coffee by weight. I can't remember the name, but it's right on the corner.

I have never shopped at Purity Cheese on Endicott Street, but I have heard they have a great selection.

There is a wonderful Italian bakery on Salem Street called Biscotti's. Very traditional and inexpensive. Also on Salem Street is a shop that carries candy, nuts, dried fruits, etc.

Don't miss the True Value Hardware Store on Salem Street, believe it or not, they have a wonderful selection of italian kitchenware and inexpensive pottery.

You might want to take some kind of a bag with handles with you, I usually end up with too many small bags to carry easily. Have a great time.

Boss Ton-

Thanks, it has been driving me crazy that I couldn't remember the name of the shop where I buy my coffee.
