Kauai Restaurants

Kal, anyone. I have a list of several of my favorite restaurants on Kauai and I'd like to hear from others.

I'll kick it off with one of my favorite North shore places.....POSTCARDS, organic, fantasctic seafood, and veggie dishes. Meat eaters, stay away!!

Let's here from all the kauai people.

Aloha and good morning. Great pre-breakfast topic to get my day started!
Hey...you're "rich in Pa" and I'm "poor in Ca."!
Huki Lau, Aussie Tims BBQ, A Pac Cafe (only have had pupus/drinks there but very good), The Brick, Waimea Brew Co. (killer nui nachos), Lemon Grass (we've never been victim to a lot of waiter horor stories.), Lizard Lounge (good burger and shrimp dish), Burger Hut, Duke's-especially Taco Tuesday's, Eggbert's for b'fasts, Aloha Pizza, Joe's on the Green, Kalaheo Steak House,
and Safeways's massive hoageys with a Kona Fire Rock on the lanai at sunset...
To name a few! ;-)

I'm sure there are a few that I've forgotten, but it's early.

Happy Hump Day to all!

great topic! We will be in Kauai for 5 nights in May....

so far we are planning on a nice dinner at the Princeville since we are staying there and a sunset dinner at the Beach House. I've read the Ultimate Guide to Kauai and other restaurant reviews on here...but could still use some guidance on where to have dinner the remaining 3 nights. Since we are driving a ways to get to the Beach House, I would prefer to stay north...or northeast.

What would be your suggestions? Duke's, Zelo's, The Lighthouse Bistro?? looking for great atmosphere and good food.

Thanks all!

Forgot to mention Zelo's in my previous post. While not spectacular, my wife and I enjoyed this place as well....a good, CHEAPER restaurant compared to those at the Princeville and the Beach House.

I know it gets mixed reviews but Brennecke's in Poipu is great. The hostess to the servers were really great to us. I couldn't decide between the Ahi or the Ono so the waiter brought me a half serving of each. Both were so great that I still would not be able to recommend which. Dining out in Hawaii or the mainland I only eat fish so I have lots of experience with various preparations. Thought Tidepools was a great location but the food was not as awesome as the atmosphere. As most others say, The Beach House was very good.

Doug, is Zelo's close to the Princeville? I forget and don't have my "bible" with me today.

Thanks! Your advice has always been helpful.

It's in Hanalei, about 10-15 minutes away. Just as an FYI, though, despite its name, it's not on the beach.

I'd give a thumbs up to the Lighthouse Bistro. Good mahi mahi burritos and fish tacos for lunch last trip.

Brennke's cerviche is "ono".
Speaking of Ono...Burger joint right outside of Anahola.

Also, Wake Up Cafe in Hanalei was a good spot to nourish up for a hike up the NapPali.

And Tropical Taco is no longer working out of his Green Trailer. He's in one of the first sets of buildings on the right as you drive into Hanalei.

OK...now I gotta go to work.

Hi, Kal, et al -

Don't forget Casa di Amici - wonderful food with a Pacific flair and some interesting Italian entrees as well - in the Poipu area. Pomodoro's in Kalaheo is scrumptious and Gerry/hostess and co-owner is delightful.

Looks like you people have had a good day with this topic.

One more of my favorite from Hanalei....THE DOLPHIN. Owned by a group of old surfers. Nothing fancy, good seafood and steaks. Best salads and homemade dressings around.

Alos, did anyone mention BUBBA;s for burgers? Where else can you go for lunch and have a chance of seeing David Crosby of Crosby, Stlls and Nash flipping Burger's.

Aloha Klq!
LTNS! How's the weather back there?

Is Cafe di Amici still open? I think we tried to go there last year and it was closed???? Small Italian place in the Poipu Shopping Ctr??? I could be wrong on this one and may be confusing my restaurants?
Cafe Portofino. Inconsistent from what I've heard of late. We had a good meal/service there tho.

The pizza joint in Koloa has a good pie too. Not as good as The Brick or Aloha Pizza, tho.
The only way I can eat a Bubba's if it's a triple w/ cheese and only after a long hike on the NaPali or on Lydgate.

And the Bull Shed for the garlic tenderloin. Mrs Kal had the new Pepper Tenderloin and loved it.

And while I'm not a big sweets eater Lapperts Ice Cream or HULA PIE!!!!!
Dinner time!

Kal mentioned two of my favorites...for inexpensive but great pizza, try Aloha Pizza @ Coconut Marketplace. Loved "The Bullshed"--salad bar with meal is not exactly diverse, but the steak/mahi-mahi combo were excellent. Try to get a window seating for ocean views!

Hey Kal -

No, Case de Amici is not in the Poipu Shopping Center and was open when we were there in Feb/March of this year. It is a restaurant that is always recommended to us by the locals and we have been extremely pleased. It is in the Poipu area around the bend from Brennecke's on a little side street that used to be a Mexican restaurant several years ago. Ring a bell? Anyway, really good food. You and your bride will have to try next Dec/Jan.

Top five special occasion? Wow that's either lots of trips to Kauai or lots of special occasions when there! : )

Here are some of my faves and why:

Beach House: Great view, terrific food and service. I know from reading rants and raves some people haven't had our experience but the only thing that would have improved our experience there would have been if we had gone there on our first night rather than our last night so we could have eaten there more often!!!

Tidepools: A table at the edge of the pond can not be beat for great atmosphere. Food was good and service was good.

Brennecke's: Again rant and raves has mixed reviews but our experience was terrific. Great Service, great food and a table right at the window gave a great view of the ocean. Not really an upscale restaurant but a fun evening.

Roys: Great food but too loud and the location is in a strip mall. No good view and atmoshpere is non-existant, nice tables and chairs, white tablecloth type restaurant.
