Lake Powell/is this realistic?
Will be in AZ October 1st for one week.
Will spend three days in Sedona and pretty much have that Itinerary settled. The next three days I have to decide on what to do.
I've got kids and am not going to hotel-hop, so was considering going to Lake Powell to the Lake Powell Resort and Marina in Wampeah (?spelling, excuse me), rent a powerboat, explore that side of the canyon.
My questions are:
Is this a feasible trip from Sedona?
Is it a worthwhile destination?
Has anyone been there with children, under five years old?
Will need to drive to Vegas after three days? Is THis feasible and is there a worthwhile route along the way.........?
Thank you,
Jen

If you plan to drive from Sedona up to Lake Powell it's 170 miles and 3 1/2 hours driving time ONE WAY. It's a beautiful drive but if you are driving back to Sedona the same day, it doesn't leave much time.
Lake Powell lake levels are very low. The main channel to the upper part of the lake is now land. The only other channel is thought Antelope Canyon and it is so narrow and deep that the water is very choppy. It's like being on the open sea. I really wouldn't suggest renting a boat and taking children under the age of 5 thought this channel. It takes about an hour to go each way. You could rent a boat and stay in the area near Wahweap Marina and over to the dam, but that won't get you to the little canyons to explore.
If you do go to Lake Powell, I would suggest spending the night and taking one of the boat tours out of Wahweap Marina.

When we were at Lake Powell this summer low water levels plus increase in private motor boat and jet ski traffic - all sorts of articles in local papers about possible future restrictions to limit rentals of both - articles mainly stated concern about high summer volume, so I would guess October would be easier - just make sure you can rent something before you make the trip.

desertbound,
From what I've gathered, the first three days you are staying in Sedona. I take it the next 3 days are at the Grand Canyon and you don't want to change lodgings because of the children, but you need to find something to do for one day.
Well there just isn't anything that close except maybe Wupatki National Monument and Sunset Crater. I don't know how exciting this will be for children under the age of 5. You're still looking at about 5 hours of driving time round trip from the S. Rim Village. These places could easily be done on the day you drive to the S. Rim from Sedona.
If you only have one extra day to do something, then you are probably better off just exploring the Grand Canyon more. If you had a couple of days I would recommend moving to Zion National Park.
