Lake Powell Vacation
My husband and I are planning a vacation to Lake Powell in Fall, '06. I have recently priced out renting a houseboat for a week, but when you consider the cost of airfare from the east, combined with boat rental and fuel for the week, it comes to around 10K. I know there have to be less expensive ways of seeing Lake Powell, and would be interested in suggestions and/or intineraries that anyone may have to suggest. Thanks!

Hi C,
Yes the houseboats are very expensive, especially the GAS!!!! Have you ever done a houseboat before? They really are made for groups. I would not want to try and manage one with just two. Try a trip of shorter length for the first time and see if you like it.
I did a 4 day houseboat vacation many years ago at Lake Powell. We loved it, BUT I would not do it again unless I had a ski boat and lots of water toys (seadoos).
The houseboats are just that - a boat that drives like a house. You don't go very far and certainly not fast. Lake Powell is HUGE and you won't see much of it even in a week. Plus there are only 3 places to take on fuel so you can't get that far before you have to go back and suck up more gas. Personally, I would be bored for a week.
If you had a ski boat/water toys, you can go up the more narrow canyons and really explore. That's what I could spend a week doing.
How about planning a 2 or 3 day visit to Lake Powell and staying at one of the marinas? Rent a ski boat and do some exploring that way. Maybe even take your camping gear on the boat. Lots of people do Lake Powell that way.
Just my opinion and a few suggestions!

Dayle,
Thanks so much for all that info. I NEVER considered that a houseboat would be so difficult! I think your suggestion of staying at a marina is a better and more cost effective solution. Like you, we want to hike and explore the coves. Sounds like you have the perfect solution. Thanks so much!

The Rainbow Bridge Boat tour on Lake Powell from the Wahweap Marina (Near Page, AZ) is excellent. You really get to see some of the lower end of the lake. Also from Page, AZ is a float trip on the Colorado River which is also excellent and a lot of fun. About 5 miles from Page is the Upper and Lower Antelope Slots Canyon and you can take a tour of the Upper Slots and go on your own for the Lower Slots. Not far from Page, AZ is a short 3/4 mile hike to Horseshoe Bend with a view of the Colorado River. So you can see there is plenty to do in the Page, AZ area of Lake Powell. There is also the Glen Canyon Dam tour. You can rent boats and jet ski's in Page. There's a lot to do in this area.
My dream vacation would be a house boat on Lake Powell, but like Dayle said, I'd want to do it with another couple or family.
