Local trips from NYC accessible by bus/train..
Hello.
I am looking for some fun local weekend trips from NYC that are accessible by bus or train and where a car wouldn't be necessary when I got there or where cheap car hire is possible. I know I'm probably asking a lot here. Anyhow, I plan to go and visit Wash DC this upcoming year and am looking for other suggestions of either day trips or weekend trips. I'm not really interested in shopping but more in walking about different neighbourhoods and outdoors activities. Loads of thanks!

Peter Pan Bus Lines and Greyhound have buses to Boston almost on the hour, and the roundtrip fare is frequently $40. Depending on time of day, the trip takes 3.5-4 hours.
You might also consider a weekend in Providence or even Philadelphia. And, if you're a basketball fan the Basketball Hall of Fame is in Springfield, MA.
All of these locations are accessible by bus.

Cold Spring, NY is a quaint little town on the Hudson, across from West Point and beautiful mountains. You can take the Metro-North train right into town (1 hour 10 minutes from Grand Central). There is great hiking (climbing up mountains..from the top you can see NYC!). I've also heard you can sign up for kayaking trips on the Hudson that start in Cold Spring.
The town has lots of little craft and antique shops (& not a single chain store). Thought I'd mention it even though you're not into shopping.
Also there are some nice places to eat. One place is the Depot, located at the old train station. You sit outdoors and eat while a band plays and trains whoosh by.

Philadelphia would make a great weekend trip from the City. Philadelphia is about 1.5 hours from NYC with Amtrak. You can take the train to 30th Street Station. Public transportation is excellent and cabs are also easy to hail on the streets.
