Looking for SNOW for New years
I live in South Florida and want to take my 8 and 9yr old on a road trip after Christmas, through New Years, in search of snow! How far South do you think I will be able to find snow? I really didn't want to spend the $1200 on air fare and rental car to get to a Western destination but am willing to drive North. How far do I have to go? Tennessee? Smoky Mountains? Kentucky? North Carolina? I'd lke a kid friendly destination.

Killington, VT got 14 inches this week according to the newsman on my station. They make snow at most of the resorts in southern VT so even if mother nature doesn't cooperate, the resorts have snow. I would guess that is true in the mountains in NC and Tenn.

I would be pretty certain of snow at New Year's in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It is a long trip, but it will be gorgeous. Rugged mountains, snowy summits, snowy woods, skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, snow boarding. But you will need to book accomodation in the next couple of weeks.

Road trip taking place from after Christmas to New Years, is that what 6 days?
Seems like you will spend most of it in a car if you are going to head to VT or NH or ME from Florida - and with 8 & 9 year old to boot - oh my.

As Dukey mentioned, your best bet is going to be a ski resort that makes snow. I'd check resorts in West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina as those will be the closest to you. Note that some, if not all resorts, prohibit playing in the man-made snow. But most of these resorts have snow tubing hills which they would enjoy.

I agree that your only probable chance to see snow will be at a ski resort that makes snow. Probably the closest would be Cataloochee in Maggie Valley, NC. The also offer tubing at Tube World -

It would be about a 13 hour drive. You could split the drive up and spend the night in St Augustine or Savannah and enjoy your stops there. See some sights your kids may enjoy. I'd continue on and spend the next night in Asheville, NC. Lots of things to see and do around Asheville and Maggie Valley is only 34 miles away. You could take a day trip to go tubing there, or even to another place if you wanted to drive further. There's a chance there will be "real" snow falling somewhere in the higher elevations and if so you could drive to go see it.
Cataloochee has a good beginner's rental package if they are interested in trying skiing or snowboarding

I have no idea about the likelihood of snow, but I do know that this would be a fun place to go - we were there on July 4th and it was great!

Hold the presses. I thought of a closer place to play in manmade snow!
I was checking to see when the snow tubing started at Scaly Mtn, just north of Dillard GA - http://www.scalymountain.com/tubing.htm
...when I realized there is great manmade snow for tubing AND a place where kids can play in the snow too - at Stone Mountain Park in Atlanta -
http://festivals.stonemountainpark.c...=search&id=113
watch the video
Manmade snow will fall every night at Atlantic Station too -
http://www.examiner.com/family-enter...y-friendly-fun
and the kids can go ice skating at Centennial Park -
http://www.centennialpark.com/events/ice.html
So, you could head up to Atlanta (about 10 hours), play in manmade snow and be poised for a quick trip into the mountains if snow DOES fall.
Less than an hour north of Atlanta is Lake Lanier and they do a festival of lights that you drive through -
http://www.lakelanier.com/events/mag...ght-of-lights/
and the Holiday Village provides some shopping and a small fair.
About an hour further north you'll be in the mountains. Lots to see and do around Clayton and Dillard GA - and there's a CHANCE you'll see snow. One year it snowed 4 times before Thanksgiving, but that's unusual.
The kids may enjoy a walk along the Tallulah Gorge rim -

If it's NOT snowing, they may enjoy a horseback ride -
http://www.dillardhousestables.com/
You may want to eat at the famous Dillard House restaurant -

About another hour up the road, you could take a ride on the Polar Express -
http://gsmr.com/events/Polar_Express.php
The total distance from Miami to Bryson City is about 800 miles and 13 hours.
You could break the drive up on the way home by stopping in Valdosta GA and going here -

It will be open after Christmas through Jan 2nd.
