Fran,
We stayed there years ago on a recommendation from a friend. It was okay. The room we stayed in was the fifty's room. It was depressing because it wasn't old enough to be antiques, it just seemed shabby. And forget luxury if that's what you are looking for. It's was just like any other motel.
Now for the glass is half full-we had a lot of fun. The whole concept is quirky. Women kept coming out of the men's room because of the urinal. I don't know if they still do this but at the restaurant next door, they had big band music and dancing. It was a "you should do it once" experience. Have fun on your trip.

Fran, two relatives of mine stayed there at different times about ten years ago. They got a kick out of it. One had the Lil Abner room. I don't know what the other was. I'm sure some are more appealing than others. I know my family enjoyed the stays.

You gotta do it once, but do not expect luxury. Some of the rooms need some help but all are different. We had one where the shower looked like a rock cave. Definitely visit the men's restroom to see the waterfall urinal. I had to be careful using the thing as you do get women visitors.

Fran: On the following website: http://www.madonnainn.com/tour, you can take a look at each of the individual rooms. Reserve one with a rock shower.

wow......I just checked out the link. I don't know about the rest of you, but I didn't see one room I would want to stay in. Creative yes, but tacky, dated, and ugly are what comes to mind.
Think I'll stick to B&Bs if I want unique - and for the same price or less.

After the castle tour check out either the GREEN GABLE INN or THE SEVEN GABLES INN in magnificient Pacific Grove, California overlooking Monterey Bay on the Monterey Peninsula. You cannot go wrong with either. Go to pacificgrove.org to check out the area. This is a real hometown and close to Carmel and the tourists.

While it may not photograph well and may not be the most plush hotel, this theme hotel is a popular place for return visitors. Being a local resident, I know that many celebrities (including people like Courtney Cox Arquette and others) are known to stay here. And it's also a popular annual anniversary destination with couples either having a favorite room or trying a new theme each year. As a previous poster suggested, the rock showers are worth the visit.

If you like Kitsch, have a quirky sense of humour; enjoy VAST amounts of food; and love pink... you'll adore Madonna Inn. My husband and I stayed in Bridal falls for our Honeymoon... great... only got out of bed to eat and shower in the rock shower... wild and wacky. We went back for a second visit taking our parents and first child. We all loved it as much the second time. - Its all down to your personality!

My boyfriend & I spent one night in the Lil Abner cave room years ago, and even though it looks tacky on the postcards and pix, it didn't feel tacky. It was super clean and very romantic. This is the only room that is 100% rock & stone (at least it was back then) except for the bedding. The bathroom sink was a giant shell. It's also the smallest room.

As a local, my advice would be to eat breakfast or lunch at the Madonna Inn, check out the gift shops (and the mens urinal if you must!) The food in the Copper Cafe is not cheap, but it's one of the best breakfasts around! It's a neat place to look around. As for hotels closer to Hearst Castle, check out B and B's in Cambria. If you are leaving Santa Barbara in the morning and then touring Hearst Castle you will not want to double back to San Luis Obispo... or to drive all the way up to Carmel. Stay in Cambria and take your time. Check your AAA book... off the top of my head I would check the Cambria Pines Lodge, FogCatcher Inn, Ollaberry Inn (SP?)Blue Dolphin Inn... Moonstone Beach is very popular.
