A nice honeymoon splurge might be a visit to the spa at the Grande Wailea. It's frequently rated one of the top 10 spas in the world. There's a $30 surcharge if you're not a guest there, but I felt it was worth it. I also enjoyed their restaurant Humuhumunukunukuapua'a (Humuhumu for short) for dinner & sunset. Ask for a seat by the oceanside railing when you make your reservation. www.grandewailea.com

My favorite lunch restaurant was Mama's Fish House on the north shore. www.mamasfishhouse.com It's cozy and charming and the kite surfers we could see from our table were amazing. It's at good location to see some other north shore sites such as Ho'okipa Lookout and Haleakala National Park.

to answer above question- it was the hawaii hotel association, i think, in this case. the front desk told us that they were 4 star this year. i did not write down the name of it, i just took them at their word, but i'm sure you could google search and come up with the system they were basing it on. there are several ratings services. most of us are familiar with mobile star ratings system and AAA has one, too.
i think the scale slides as the hotels at the top improve what they offer and the rooms at the formerly grand ones get refurbished, or they don't and time marches on and expectations are greater, so stars can shift from year to year.

We recently returned from Maui and stayed at the Sheraton Maui in Kaanapali. The Kapalua Bay Hotel looked very nice and Kapalua is beautiful. We said that the next time we come to Maui we would like to stay in Kapalua. Since the Kapalua Bay Hotel and Sheraton Maui are both Starwood properties (as is the Westin) you can go to the beach/pool at the Sheraton if it is raining in Kapalua. The snorkeling at Black Rock in front of the Sheraton is wonderful. Enjoy your honeymoon.

Thanks for all the advice. It's set. We will be staying at the Kapalua Bay Hotel this coming January. It'll be a bit rainy, but I think it's gonna be ok. We'll just head down south. Judging from what I read, we're both excited at the fact that the resort is much more catered for couples.

Getting the Maui Revealed book this weekend. Trying to get a reservation at the Old Lahaina Luau. Looking forward to snorkeling and sunrise at Haleakala. Also checking out Helicopter tours. Any more suggestions would be great!

How about nightlife? Where can we go for a little bit of drinks and dancing?
