Maui Sands-is this a good place to stay?

I am trying to find a condo in the Kaanapali-Kahana area for Feb 14-22 and it's becoming difficult when I want a 2BR oceanfront. I had no idea you needed to start over a year in advance.

I have located a condo at Maui Sands (crossing my fingers it is available the entire time I'm there) but have no experience with the place. Has anyone stayed there in their oceanfront buildings? My other choice is Papakea where I stayed a year ago and liked it quite a bit. But all the 2BR condos there are not available for the entire time.

Your reviews would be very helpful.

Try the (Aston) Mahana, they have some 2/2 units. They're next door but one to The Embassy Resort (Maui Kai is in between).
We stayed at the Mahana Nov 2003 and it was fine.

Good hunting.

Try this site:

For some reason some of the links in the site don't work. Most do.

Just for anyone's information, I was in touch with new condo owners, the Shermans, who have a second-story condo at Maui Sands. I was NOT impressed with them and I would not rent a condo from them anywhere. First of all, they have more fees than I have ever seen on a Maui condo. Registration fee, breakage deposit, excessive cleaning fee. I have never been asked to fork out 500 bucks in case I break something. I wonder what kind of excuse they will come up with to keep it, knowing that I won't travel to small claims court to fight them.

My conversations with both of them were also unpleasant. I could not get a word in edgewise with Wanda, his wife. She gave contradictory information to what her husband later would say. Despite my repeated comments that I have never paid to "register" my registration nor paid a breakage fee, he insisted that it was condo policy across Maui to collect a refundable breakage deposit.

Maybe my experiences with both stays in Maui and calls to other condo owners are unique, but I sure would like some feedback on whether anyone else has paid a breakage deposit.

In any event, beware of dealing with this couple. They might be totally honest people, but I cannot imagine having to deal with them on a condo rental, especially if there were complaints or problems.

I've rented condos/townhomes direct thru owners the last 6 trips to Maui, and have never paid a breakage fee. I've usually just sent about a 50% deposit & paid a cleaning fee. Puamana townhomes are on the southern edge of Lahaina, not in Ka'anapali, but you might try them.
