Midway Chicago Airport -- track cancellations?

I'm trying to figure out if a flight scheduled to depart MDW-PHX on Southwest will actually leave at 7:05 pm tonight. We are trying to fly a job candidate home.

Southwest cancelled the first 5 flights of this route today but apparently one did depart at noon today. Flights are still showing on-time even an hour from now so they are NOT being proactive and just cancelling hours ahead of time. We don't want to send him to the airport and have him stranded. Is there a reliable way to tell if his plane will make it out or does it get more unlikely the later it gets?

Situation like this is very fluid. They will not cancel flights this early, but they will, closer to departure time.

If this person really needs to get home, and won't be being stranded at the airport, send him there. But I'd book an refundable airport hotel room if such is still available.

If he doesn't have to get home ASAP, call WN now and confirm him on a flight tomorrow. Most airlines are allowing passengers to change once for free.

Sorry, I mean, if he doesn't MIND being stranded, send him to the airport.

I'm not sure what to do -- I feel like we'd be dumping him at the airport and letting him fight it out on his own.

We've booked a hotel near-by that we can cancel by 6 pm. But even if his flight says ontime at 6 pm I really don't think we should actually cancel the hotel reservation. Midway and the near-by hotels are awful -- I almost feel like we should keep him downtown in a nicer hotel, take him out to dinner, fly him out tomorrow... Guess we'll leave it up to him.

thanks rkwan.

I am one of those trying to avoid getting stuck in an airport with this storm - you are a kind person!

My husband is currently stranded inChicago at ORD. His 7 PM flight for tonight was cancelled yesterday. He tried to get on 4PM today but that was cancelled an hour or so out - 5 PM flight is now listed as "delay or cancellation likely" All this on United.

At least you don't have the added complication of flying into snow - husband is trying to get into Boston where there will likely be a blizzard tomorrow. Good luck.

This information may be useful. WN2802 is a multi-leg flight that's operated on the same aircraft. (Southwest does this, most other airlines don't).

It started in Providence at 5pm EST, which is about 35 minutes from now, arrive MDW 6pm CST. Then 7:05p departure for PHX, continuing to Ontario, California.

Right now, the PVD-MDW leg is still showing on schedule. I think if that flight does depart for MDW, then there's a good chance the rest won't be cancelled either.

Keep checking the status of WN2802 PVD-MDW.

Chicago Tribune just reported that the storm in getting worse are people are encouraged not to be on the road until tomorrow. Book a flight for tomorrow afternoon and stay in and stay safe.

WN2802 PVD-MDW is now showing delayed. Won't get in MDW till 7:10pm.

MDW-PHX show departure time of 7:30pm. I think that's incredibly optimistic, even if it does operate.

BTW, of the 42 WN flights scheduled to depart MDW between noon and 3pm, only one is in the air so far. About 2/3 have been cancelled, the rest showing long delays.

I'd call and reschedule right now if that hasn't been done.

Arrival from PVD has been moved to 7:40p, and departure to PHX 8:00p. I'd be surprised if it doesn't get canceled altogether soon.

I suggested we ask the person what their preference was -- fight it out at the airport for hours in the small chance of getting out tonight or being checked into a downtown hotel immediately, and rebooking them for a flight tomorrow.

I was dismissed as "over-reacting". so frustrating but thanks for your help.

The plane is enroute from PVD now. Should arrive MDW at around 10:25pm. It should be able to go out by around 11pm and arrive PHX maybe 1:30am.

It's one of the few flights that WN hasn't cancelled, so consider very lucky for just about 4 hours late.

Wow, really??

I'm going to call and give them this update just in case they gave up and crashed at the hotel.

Thanks so much!

The plane is on the ground now. See how fast they can turn it around and depart for PHX.

Can't believe WN is still going to depart so late! He decided to go to bed and is taking his chances on leaving tomorrow. I hope the weather improves and that the morning flights aren't too backlogged. Looks like the snow and wind will continue through morning.

It's been very helpful to provide him with options/info so he could decide what to do -- I really appreciate the help rkkwan!

No problem. And just to finish the story, WN2802 did leave MDW, but took off at around 12:20am this morning, arriving PHX around 2:30am. It completed its trip to ONT too.

Many airlines will try to operate as long as the airport is open. Because they'll need that plane this morning to operate out of ONT anyways.

On some routes, WN may skip a stop, but I am not sure if their 737-700 can make it straight from Providence to Phoenix.
