Mom and teen daughters in NYC-where to stay?

Next summer I'll be taking my 13 and 16 year old daughters to NYC. We did major sightseeing there last summer, so next year we'll mostly shop and see shows. Last time we stayed way down at the Embassy Suites (there were 5 of us that trip), but I want a more central location this time. I don't necessarily want to be ON Broadway, but I'd like the hotel to be very convenient to Broadway.

I'd like to keep it under $400 per night, but might consider paying more for something perfect. Any suggestions?

There are 65 replies to virtually the same question on the following post on the U.S. board here. do a search for that post and you'll find tons of good info.

"Where to stay in NYC if going to a Broadway play?"

Okay, once I forced myself to wade through the Times Square/Las Vegas arguments on the other thread, I was able to make a decent list of possibilities. Thanks.

Great. That did turn into a long discussion, but useful in getting a handle on what hotels are really the best for Broadway shows and the idea of what is "ON" Broadway or "near" Broadway or "convenient to" Broadway and the idea of what constitutes a hotel listed with a "Times Square" location.

With three "ladies", my personal favorite would be the Doubletree Times Square. Its a great location for walking to shows, is right on top of an excellent subway stop for transportation and the baths are huge. They have two sinks in each bath and another in the bar area of the living room. That one also has a big mirror and decent lighting, so everyone can be primping at the same time. You would also have three beds if you use the sofa bed in the living room and lots of space to spread out.

Have fun.

We just stayed at the Salisbury. It is walking distance to Times Square but closer to Central Park. The hotel is not a deluxe accommodation but it is clean, comfortable and well located. We had a one bedroom suite with 2 beds in the bedroom, a sofabed in the living room and a kitchenette for well under your stated budget. I think the Doubletree is probably a step upwards but more expensive.

Of course, it depends on your dates, but I booked the Doubletree at the end of May this year for $339+tax for a suite with two double beds.

The suites at the Blakely are also very nice (not cheaper), but the baths aren't nearly as big as the Doubletree.

My sister is going to be in NY in a couple of weeks and got an excellent rate at a suite hotel called The London NYC (something like 54th and 6th or thereabouts). Neither of us have ever stayed there and I don't know anyone who has so maybe it's new or just newly purchased and refurbished. Anyway, her room averages out to about $1000 for three nights (I think she said that includes taxes but I'm not sure). Gordon Ramsay has his restaurant in this hotel.

The London is great but not sure how well it accomodates 3 to a suite. Their suites don't have kitchens either. Very upscale and very nice.

Glad to hear it's nice, McL. I think my sister got a good rate.

I checked the London and next June the rates for the lowest price suites are in the $515 per night range.

Yikes! I think my sister must have gotten the $249 special they're advertising now.

Coming on for the same reason. Lived in NYC for 17 years. When ever I showed the city to my nieces
we stayed around Union Square. K lived down there for 4 years but when I lived up town we would spend a fair bit of our time down town. There are a lot of funky "college age" marketed restaurants downtown.
Its just a young persons hang out.

I would rent a condo if I were you. Go to VRBO. Saw one last night just above cafe Orlin. That street is filled with cafes that my nieces flipped over. You will see the NYC that newyorkers see and avoid tourist (assemly line) food AND PRICES.

Union Square is about 5 minutes train ride to bway. Flat iron, gramercy park, Washington square (not washington heights) are all close by.
